After the death of the master chimney sweeper Eduard Schlumberger, the journeyman Theo Kowalski hopes to take over the business. But the returned home Gabi, daughter of the deceased, has the same job and receives the sweeping district initially on a trial basis for one year.

The rivalry between the new boss Gabi and the journeyman Theo increases and both resort to unfair tricks to outdo the other. Gabi's relatives later interfere in the argument.
