Kaisermühlen Blues , other spellings Kaisermühlen-Blues , Kaisermühlenblues , is an Austrian television series produced by MR Film from 1992 to 1999 on behalf of ORF , which has achieved cult status far beyond the borders of Austria .

The plot of the series takes place in the eponymous district part Kaisermühlen of 22  Viennese municipal district Donaustadt . The main setting is a community building , on whose "10er Staircase" most of the main characters live. These scenes were filmed in the Schüttauhof, built during the time of Red Vienna (the “10er Staircase” in the series corresponds to the real Staircase 7) and on the side of the street on Kaisermühlendamm facing the New Danube . It depicts the everyday coexistence of the residents of the community building, who are mainly part of the Viennese working class , and their interaction with other social classes. In the episodes, topics and problems of current political and social events such as racism, xenophobia and tolerance were often dealt with from a humanist perspective. Linguistically, the series makes extensive use of the Viennese dialect and its special expressions, often with a rustic to vulgar choice of words.

The screenplay for the series, like the novel accompanying the series (1994), comes from Ernst Hinterberger , who appears in a short role in every episode as an eternally nagging Viennese, mostly cursing the Goethehof residents. The music was partly contributed by Roland Neuwirth and his Extremschrammeln , which also appear in individual episodes. The ensemble consisted to a large extent of Austrian actors and cabaret artists who were already known at the time and who only became known later.

Between 2000 and 2008 a spin-off of the Kaisermühlen Blues was filmed with Trautmann . This crime - television series plays around the figure of von Wolfgang Böck Police Commissioner presented and always mentioned only the surname Polycarp Trautmann, the offset in the Karmeliterviertel in the 2nd district Leopoldstadt , in there settled red light and milieu of the petty thief, and around a corrupt members of the National Council , determined.

Origin and production

After the success of the television series A real Viennese does not go under , Hinterberger wanted to write something for television again, but it should include more main characters. So the idea was born to let the series play in a community building in Kaisermühlen, where “people still know each other”.

In six seasons, 64 episodes and one special episode were produced.

  • Finally, the big ceremony takes place in the courtyard of the “Zehner-Stiege”: Gneisser reads out a self-written poem that ends with the words “May earth and stone fall apart, Kaisermühlen will always be!”, Franzi ignites the fireworks prematurely.
  • The Gstettners also have a happy ending: René returns to Vienna-Donaustadt and proclaims that he is “fed up” with the “wide world”.
  • In the end credits one learns that Vysloczil was sentenced to 6 years and shares a prison cell with Pipsi. Reini and Koziber's business in the Prater is doing great. Sebesta has crept into Steinhof disguised as a gardener. Joschi and cake baker fly to Turkey. Ines is very pregnant. Lukas and Claudia celebrate their wedding. Gustl and Nancy have given up the dream of the house. Schoitl und Gneisser's latest project is a lingerie show in the district museum. Mr. Naderer is writing a book.

Guest role: Karl Künstler as a pyrotechnician.

Characterization of the main characters

Gitti Schimek

She is the focal point of the plot both in the novel as well as in the series. Gitti is a fun-loving woman, at the beginning of the series she is in her late 40s. Not much is said about her family background, apparently she comes from a working-class family and has been at home in municipal housing for a long time. In episode 37, she meets her alleged father, a soldier who worked in the French Foreign Legion.

Gitti is fired at the beginning of the plot and then gets by with a few jobs until she takes over a tobacco shop for the entire duration of the series. She is very courageous and always gives her opinion without being abusive. Gitti likes to stand up for the weaker, and it is suggested several times that Gitti is a social democrat. However, the resolute lady is by no means "obedient to the authorities" and always forms her own opinion. One episode mentions that she was with the Red Falcons with a well-known SPÖ politician. She is strong-willed, honest and not on the lips, but never slips into vulgarity like other series characters.

Gitti has two children: son Gustl and daughter Ines. At first they both still live with her, almost nothing is said about her father. In episode 4 Kaiser casually says that Gitti Schimek “the man ran away.” Caretaker Turecek also mentions that Gitti “got through her children on her own” (episode 18). Gustl notes that he “never had a real father”.

The somewhat plump Gitti is popular with men because of her cheerful way of life, her blonde hair and blue eyes. In the course of the series, a few gentlemen make her advances. The tobacconist is looking for a man who is serious about her. First, Gitti is in a relationship with the dark-skinned chauffeur Josephus. Despite facing some xenophobia, she stands by their relationship. Later, Trautmann conquered her heart. Many people ask Gitti for advice or help. She always tries generously to support them. Racism and narrow-mindedness make her angry, and Gitti Schimek protests loudly against injustices several times.

Like her actress Marianne Mendt, Gitti Schimek is passionate about singing. The Kaisermühlenblues , the song that opens the series instrumentally, is sung by her in several episodes

August "Gustl" Schimek

Gustl is Gitti Schimek's son. At the beginning of the series he worked as a patrol officer, later he switched to the criminal police. Gustl is a state official with heart and soul, and in almost every dialogue he makes his work the topic. But just as often he grumbles about "the club". He is a bit irascible and cheeky, in the series he suffers a few disadvantages due to his cheeky mouth. Gustl embodies the image of a Viennese suburban proletarian: quick-tempered, vulgar, somewhat xenophobic, pessimistic, obedient to the authority and macho.

Gustl marries the waitress Nancy in the first season. Shortly afterwards they have a son, August Jr. ("Gusti") and then a daughter, Leonore.

Gustl is very ambitious and always wants to improve his professional and private life. For example, he is building a house. Gustl often quarrels with his sister Ines and gets his head washed by mother Gitti when he once again appears to be the master of the house . Gustl's ventures often go wrong, so at the end of the series he has to bury his house project as a failure.

Ines Schimek

Ines is Gitti's second child and only daughter. In episode 35 she is 25 years old. Ines is a pretty and fun-loving young woman. She falls in love quickly and always believes that the one she is currently adoring is the man of her life. Several times she has concrete marriage plans, among her exes are among others. a. Burschi, Vysloczil and Abdul, a medical student from Egypt. Just like in her relationships, Ines leads an unsteady life at work. She often changes jobs and moves in and out of Gitti. She developed a special relationship of trust with Gitti's partner, Trautmann. In episode 35 Ines is raped in Tyrol and has the baby aborted. Ultimately, she is in a relationship with Pepi Schoitl and is expecting a baby from him at the end of the series.

Trautmann

Trautmann is a criminal inspector and appears for the first time in episode 17. Soon afterwards he becomes Gitti's partner. All that is known about his past is that he was married and had a daughter. His marriage failed due to the workload and his daughter, Ilse, died of a heroin overdose at the age of 17. Trautmann suffers from a strong remorse because he could not prevent this. In episode 46 it is told for the first time that Trautmann is a trained carpenter.

Trautmann is the illegitimate child of an English occupation soldier named Weaver and is ashamed of his first name “Polycarp”. In the series, he can therefore only be addressed by his last name. He is a calm, confident police officer who conscientiously follows his work and does not bother about regulations when human instinct is required.

Initially, Trautmann worked in Kaisermühlen, but was soon transferred to the 20th district of Vienna and was therefore Gustl's superior. Trautmann supports Gustl and Ines wherever he can. He becomes a father figure for both of them without claiming it. He is a heavy smoker and is often filmed rolling a cigarette. Several times, sympathy for the Social Democratic Party of Austria is indicated.

The figure of Trautmann was won for another series. After the end of the Kaisermühlen blues , ten 90-minute episodes were filmed between 2000 and 2005 in which Trautmann solves cases that mostly take place in Vienna's underworld. In a Trautmann episode it is said that Gitti separated from Trautmann in 1995 because his job was too stressful. Thereupon Trautmann moves back into his old apartment and allows himself to be transferred to Leopoldstadt (police station 2, coll. Koat 2 ). Trautmann becomes department inspector for the newly created group 4. The entire series takes place in the quarter around the Karmelitermarkt in particular . Other characters (except the character of King Kong, who was a minor character in Kaisermühlen Blues) from the Kaisermühlen Blues no longer appear.

Rudi Gneisser

Gneisser is the socialist counterpart to his counterpart, the District Councilor Schoitl. He is married to Wilma and has a daughter named Claudia. In Gneisser, too, Hinterberger processed the cliché of a Viennese district politician: Gneisser is very committed, but his ideas usually fail due to a lack of realism.

The politician does various jobs during the series, always doing "stupid" and losing this position again. Hinterberger criticizes the Austrian post haggling because Gneisser is always brought to various positions in the Austrian administration by party colleagues.

Gneisser is very fond of the female sex and Wilma cheats on her husband too.

The Viennese are cluttered and often confuse important things. In the series he almost always appears at the side of his counterpart Schoitl. Here, too, Ernst Hinterberger caricatures the cooperation between the old Austrian parties ÖVP and SPÖ. Gneisser and Schoitl work together several times, and they also come up with “ideas” for the district together. The party leadership is often "hit on the hat" for their strange efforts and scandals. Gneisser takes it so far that he is eventually kicked out of the district council. Gitti Schimek, who took over in his place, finally resigns her mandate in favor of the SPÖ politician.

Erwin Schoitl

Schoitl is the ÖVP district councilor for the Danube city and does not live in the municipal housing on Schüttaustraße. He has a log cabin with a garden, where he initially lives with his German wife Renate, later with Leopoldine Turecek and finally with Johanna Suntil and his son Josef Pepi from a previous marriage . Schoitl owns a leather goods shop, which he soon has to give up, after which he pursues various activities. As with District Councilor Gneisser, Schoitl receives posts from his party colleagues. Like Gneisser, he is so clumsy that he loses it after a short time. The two of them are always working on new projects, all of which are doomed to failure.

Another thing they have in common with Rudi Gneisser is Schoitl's love for the opposite sex. Numerous illegitimate Pantscherl determine his life, the first episode already reports on a relationship with Sabine Leitner. He then had a long relationship with Leopoldine Turecek, whom he also married, but the marriage later turned out to be invalid. In the Catholic Film Commission, Erwin watches and rates porn films. Erwin has a lot of trouble with his mother: The mother would like to take control of her boy and interfere in his affairs. Schoitl suffers a lot from this.

Leopoldine Turecek

Turecek is the caretaker of the ten-man stairs and not exactly on the lips. Dressed in striking fashion, she wages “war” with a pointed tongue against anyone who wants to play himself out as the boss in “her” house. “Gemma, gemma” or “... otherwise the sparks will splash” are typical sayings of the resolute lady. She is considered a control freak and always needs to know what is going on in the house. She gets along well with Gitti Schimek.

After a few failed Gspusis , she is in a relationship with Erwin Schoitl, whom she calls Bärli-Bär . Schoitl is torn between his mother and Turecek, both want to determine his life. Turecek finally gives up the caretaker job, Koziber becomes her successor. The ex-caretaker opened a schnitzel restaurant with Schoitl . This has to close in episode 42, the character of Turecek no longer appears in the series from then on.

Elisabeth "Lieserl" Koziber

In episode 9 Koziber becomes the caretaker on Schüttaustraße. Gitti Schimek got to know her before (episode 4). Gitti initially worked with Koziber in the kitchen of a Kaisermühln inn, a dispute turned into a friendship when Gitti showed solidarity with Koziber. Koziber is quieter than Turecek, but just as curious and interested in life on Zehnerstiege . You and the entire Schimek family get along very well, so Koziber et al. a. Godmother of Klein-Gusti. She later marries Reini, a police officer and later a private detective, who she calls Lieserl . The marriage with Reini goes through a crisis when the detective starts an affair with a Prater entrepreneur during a surveillance job. Eventually the couple get back together and Reini inherits their entire company from his love affair when they suddenly die. The series ends with Reini and Koziber happily managing their amusement facilities in Vienna's Prater.

Koziber's "standard saying" "There comes joy!" Became a winged Austrian word.

Eberhart Kudrnac

Kudrnac is a single pensioner who lives on Zehnerstiege . He used to work as a beach attendant on the old Danube. Despite his simple living conditions, Kudrnac is very educated and has his heart in the right place. He is happy to deal with the historical past of Kaisermühlen and to develop a. a. a chronicle. The pensioner starts to look after the mentally handicapped Franzi from episode 5. This, Gitti Schimek and Koziber are among Kudrnac's best friends on Schüttaustraße. Kudrnac can only be addressed by his last name, because he is embarrassed by his first name. The viewer only finds out about this when Franzi and Kudrnac drive to Tyrol because Kudrnac has fallen in love with Sandra's aunt. This relationship fails, but in the end the pensioner married Karoline Haydn.

Kudernacs Beagle is called by him district council , because he supposedly looks like the same. In episode 17 the dog is put to sleep, but Kudrnac is soon given a successor who accompanies him constantly.

Angelika Kaiser

Angelika Kaiser is usually only called Frau Kaiser . She is the antagonist of the series as she is shown as an arrogant and superficial resident. She often observes the people on the Zehnerstiege with binoculars and shares her findings by phone with a Ms. Pippal, who does not appear in the series. Mrs. Pippal dies in episode 31. Always by Mrs. Kaiser's side is her dog Wasti . Ms. Kaiser is a conceited snoop, she spreads a lot of falsehoods and rumors and thus triggers disasters. In her snooping actions she uses aids such as B. a video camera or bed bugs. Nobody in the “Zehnerstiege” likes them. In the credits it is told that Kaiser is moving to Vienna-Hietzing, from where she came.

Trivia

The surname of the district council “Gneisser” goes back to the Viennese verb “gneißen”; it means something like “understand”, “understand” and is meant ironically, in the sense of “conceptual”. "Schoitl" means "fool, simple-minded person, fool, booby". It is derived from Yiddish schótje (= fool) and is noted in the Grimm dictionary with the phonetic form “look”. The character of Mr. Naderer, played by the author Ernst Hinterberger himself, is also a "speaking name". The verb “nadern” means “denounce, report, betray”, the noun “Naderer” belongs to “Natter” (snake).

Very caricaturing for outsiders, but common for Viennese or Austrians despite the contradiction, is also that the surname of the xenophobic FPÖ politician Hermann Vysloczil ( Alfons Haider ) refers to a frequent Czech migration background in Vienna.

In his role as Erwin Schoitl, Peter Fröhlich wore a toupee for the entire series because he was half bald .

Since 2015, Wolfgang Böck has been the speaker of the station announcements on the Vienna bus routes 92A and 92B, whose routes lead through Kaisermühlen.

Differences between series and novel

In Hinterberger's novel, almost all of the characters in the series are illuminated and some of the episodes are shortened. Here are some differences and precisions:

character book series Others
Kudrnac
  • The book explains that Kudrnac had learned the trade of industrial clerk before the Second World War , he was then two years in British captivity (Dorset) and worked there as a farm worker. In order to stay in the fresh air, after working as a road worker, he applied as a beach keeper in the Gänsehäufl . He married and had a daughter. He became a widower at the age of around 30 and does not see his daughter often today. In addition, Kudrnac has two granddaughters, but there is little contact with his daughter's family, since Kudrnac's son-in-law is a “better man” and does not share the communist worldview.
  • Kudrnac is vice chairman of the "worker fishermen" in Albern.
  • Kudrnac has known Gitti Schimek since childhood.
  • Kudrnac's dog is called “ mayor ” in the book because it is said to look similar to the then mayor of Vienna, Helmut Zilk .
Gitti Schimek
  • Gitti's family background is described in more detail in the book: Gitti learned the trade of hairdresser in a shop on Praterstrasse. Her first friend was called Hansi, the second Robert. Gitti became pregnant twice by Robert, the first time she had an illegal abortion. When she was six months pregnant with her second child, her strict parents threw her out and she found shelter with her grandfather, who was a retired police officer, in Moissigasse. She met her next great love, Toni, in Gänsehäufl , who is the father of daughter Ines. Gitti's mother raised her grandchildren on Schiffmühlenstrasse, while Gitti worked in a metal goods factory in Liesing .
  • In the book, Gitti counts reading novels and old television thrillers to her hobbies. Her favorite singers are Ray Charles and Nat King Cole .
  • She is a heavy smoker.
  • Gitti quits the shelter after the landlord wants to kick out the many UN employees who come because of Gitti's excellent home-style cooking.
  • The series only mentions that Gitti's husband "ran away" from her. In episode 4, Gustl says to Ines: “We both can't possibly have the same father.” So in the series the two are siblings and not just half-siblings.
  • Gitti shows solidarity with Koziber, as the landlord treats his old workforce worse, because Gitti's cooking skills appeal to the guests more. Gitti then quits.
Ines Schimek
  • Ines birthday is according to the book in March. She is the child of Toni Burggraf, a lathe operator from Simmering . He did not want to marry Gitti when she was pregnant with Ines because he had had "bad experiences" with the marriage.
  • Ines particularly likes to play records and is “a lazy dream” when it comes to household chores (original quote Gitti Schimek).
  • As in the book, the series also shows the fact that Ines very often moves around the apartment naked. Her frequent “amours” and arguments with Gustl are also discussed.
"Gustl" Schimek
  • According to the book, Gustl's father is Gitti's childhood sweetheart Robert: an apprentice tailor whom Gitti met when he was training with master tailor Minarik on Praterstrasse . Gustl is, after Gittis abortus , the second child from this relationship. His father is entered as "unknown" in the birth certificate, which is shameful for "Gustl". Robert ran away even before Gustl's arrival and so father and son never met.
  • Gustl learned the profession of electrician. As a child he was very affectionate and well-behaved, but the school and the apprenticeship made him a "rough guy".
  • To emulate his great-grandfather, Gustl went to the police.
  • Gustl only mentions in the series that he never had a real father.
René
  • In the book, René's last name is "Haslinger"
  • He is also shown as a petty crook. His nickname is "the Gschwinde" because he draws his knife so quickly.
  • In the series René is called "Gstettner" with his family name.
  • René is shown more as a "tough guy".
Trautmann
  • In the book, Trautmann tells the story of his family differently: His wife died of abdominal cancer and his daughter is 24 years old and got on the wrong track. Since the age of 22, Trautmann has found puncture marks on the arms of his child and he socializes with "dodgy" men. Ingrid, the girl's name, has graduated from high school, but lives as a strolling student into the day.
  • The relationship between Gitti and Trautmann does not take up so much space in the book, as Gitti only meets her future partner towards the end of the novel.
  • In the series, Trautmann's daughter Ilse died at the age of 17. Trautmann's wife divorced him long before that. The only thing that agrees in the book and TV is that the marriage was shattered by Trautmann's workload and that the police officer had too little time for his child.
"Burschi" Leitner
  • In the book, “Burschi” opens the fitness center
  • “Burschi” was once a professional at Wiener Austria. Later his career took him to Spain, Italy and France. Because of his two goals in the away international match in Scotland, he was called the "Hero of Glasgow".
  • In the series Joschi Täubler is the one who does this.
  • The character "Joschi Täubler" does not appear in the book at all. A similar figure is "Gucki Strohal", a small crook who belongs to the group around "Burschi" and René.
  • In episode 3 of the spin-off “Trautmann”, a former footballer also appears: Josef Kriwanek, known as the “Panther of Glasgow”. A former “miracle goalkeeper” at Austria, who now lives as a homeless alcoholic.
Nancy
  • Nancy's workplace in the book is the "Café Gänsehäufel", where she met "Gustl".
  • In the series, Nancy was a waitress at the Chinese restaurant.
  • The book goes on to say that the "Café Gänsehäufel" is the (dodgy) predecessor of the Chinese restaurant. Sebesta, René Haslinger (Gstettner), Burschi Leitner and “Gucki” Strohal were often guests there. Gustl had met Nancy there and, as an officer, had the drug deals in the back room blown up.
Mrs. Pippal
  • In the book, Kaiser is on the phone with a woman Vlk.
  • In the series, this person is called "Pippal".
Vysloczil
  • In the book his first name is: Horst.
  • In the series the character is called: Hermann Vysloczil.
Koziber
  • In the book, Koziber Gitti introduces himself as "Hanni".
  • Koziber says that her grandfather was "injected to death" by the Nazis in a nursing home.
  • Koziber's name is Elisabeth and her husband "Reini" calls "Lieserl".
Mrs. Kaiser
  • In the book, Kaiser is not only shown as a chatty "bite gurn", her rejection of foreigners is also made clear. Hinterberger calls them "Nazifee". Not only foreign citizens, but also the disabled "Franzi" are a thorn in the side of the Kaiser.
  • Kaiser does not express any direct Nazi sympathies in the series.
Erwin Schoitl
  • The book tells that Schoitl met his German wife on the Baltic Sea . With their money the handbag assistant bought his leather goods shop.
  • How the Schoitls came to their business and their private home is not dealt with in the TV series.
