The Royal Bavarian District Court is a 53-part TV series by ZDF that was created between 1969 and 1972 and describes court scenes in a district court in the fictional Lower Bavarian town of Geisbach with the other communities of Kirchenzell and Dürling in 1911/1912.

content

The first 26 episodes were broadcast from January 1969. A second season of also 26 episodes started in October 1970 with great success. The last episode aired in January 1972.

The cases are mostly original and idealize "the good old days" of the Kingdom of Bavaria before 1914 under the reign of Prince Regent Luitpold . The author Georg Lohmeier himself was a proponent of the reintroduction of the monarchy in Bavaria. A special trademark of the series is the magistrate August Stierhammer (in the episode The Pain and suffering he is called Benedikt Stiersdorfer), who sometimes uses strange and cunning methods of litigation. He was played by Hans Baur .

After it was first broadcast on ZDF, the series was repeated several times at irregular intervals and still appears now and then on Bavarian television .

All the outdoor shots were taken in Upper Bavaria in the Rupertiwinkel , mostly in what is now the Berchtesgadener Land district . The first scene of the opening credits shows a shot of Teisendorf . The author Lohmeier can be seen briefly in the opening credits as a pastor in front of the collegiate church in Laufen . The cattle market was shot at Rupertusplatz in Laufen . The district court building shown in the opening credits does not exist as such, it is the town hall of the Salzach town of Tittmoning with the market square. In the background, at 00:40 of the opening credits, a car that is not removed can be seen.

The text of the opening credits, spoken by Gustl Bayrhammer , reads: “It was a lovely time, the good old days before 14th. At that time, His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, an art-loving monarch, ruled because the king was melancholy. The beer was still dark, the people were typical, the boys dashing, the dirndls demure and the dignitaries a bit elegant and a bit casual. A lot of things were still okay back then. Because the gendarmerie ensured order and tranquility and the royal district court ensured justice. ”The opening credits are accompanied by the melody of the district court lander .

The action of the court scenes follows a recurring scheme. After initial excitement and boiling emotions in the dock and in the auditorium, everything dissolves in favor of a "spin" under the strict, sometimes winking negotiation of the experienced chairman. Usually after one or the other vertigo has been exposed. Immediately afterwards you get along again, everything was not meant to be so bad and the minds have long since calmed down again.

Often the bailiff has to visit the economist, landowner and brewery owner Joseph Fäustl in his restaurant to ask him for a testimony in court. He usually meets the stout, old economist over a sumptuous and beery sausage or roast breakfast. Sometimes some of the local dignitaries keep him company. The long, lean and always hungry bailiff is then often given a snack and beer and stays seated while the economist comfortably lounges into the courthouse - or sometimes not. If he appears in court, it is usually as a “ deus ex machina ”: His witness contribution then acts as the key to an amicable settlement of the dispute.

The end credits begin with a close-up of Pepi Scherfler as tuba player in the brass band during his solo at the entrance to the district court polka he composed , which accompanies the end credits musically. Then the distinctive voice of Gustl Bayrhammer can be heard again. Then he says: “Life goes on, whether acquittal or imprisonment, even in the good old days - and our old advice never sent anyone to the guillotin ... A lovely time, despite the incidents - human. And that's why these scenes keep coming back - in the Royal Bavarian District Court. ”This voice-over always accompanies the same carefully choreographed dance scene in a beer garden. This is followed - with a cut - a look at the table of the above-mentioned dignitaries, who comment on the outcome of the process together with the respective process participants in a conciliatory manner. The scheme thus follows the classic comedy , in which all participants have to be reconciled with each other at the end.
