The Cineplexx cinemas Ges.mbH is the largest cinema operator in Austria and a subsidiary of Constantin Film Holding , based in Vienna . It was founded in 1993 and operates under the name Cineplexx 21 multiplex cinema centers (one of them in South Tyrol ) and 6 other single or multi-room cinemas. The largest cinema operator in Austria after Constantin is Hollywood Megaplex , since United Cinemas International bought the Austrian cinemas from Cineplexx.
history
The first Cineplexx cinema opened on October 31, 1996 in Graz. After the Apollo Cinema in December 1993, which was still being built by Cineinvest, a subsidiary of Constantin Film-Holding and Kiba , it was Constantin Film-Holding's second cinema center. The largest Cineplexx was built in November 1999 on the so-called Donauplatte, the Cineplexx Reichsbrücke with 13 halls and 3,400 seats. However, this was closed again in 2011. Since Kiba went bankrupt in 1999, the Cineplexx cinema chain has been the largest cinema operator in Austria.
In March 2001, the Cineplexx parent Constantin took over the multiplex cinema in Auhof opened by the Loews Group in 1999 (now: Cineplexx Wien-Auhof ) and in December 2002 the cinema in the Vienna Twin Towers from the German Cinestar group, which has since been called Cineplexx Wienerberg is called. In 2004 Constantin also took over the multiplex cinema opened in 1999 in the Donauzentrum, the Donauplex .
The market shares of the Cineplexx cinemas in the number of Austrian cinema visits and box office results were between 22 and 25% in 2000 and 2001, and around 12% in 2002 and 2003.
In 2006 the Cineplexx chain had 24 cinemas with 56 halls and almost 33,000 seats out of a total of 176 cinemas with 560 halls and 101,000 seats across Austria. For 2006 this results in a share of 33% of the total visitor capacity of Austrian cinemas. Since then, the number of cinemas has increased to 30, including 24 Cineplexx cinema centers.
On May 12, 2009 the first Cineplexx cinema outside Austria was opened in Bozen (South Tyrol), with 7 cinemas and a total of 1,416 seats. It is the first multi-room cinema in Italy that is fully digitized , but also has analog projectors.
The three cinemas of the UCI chain in Austria have been part of the Cineplexx chain since the beginning of 2019 .
