The cinema in St. Pölten was opened on November 29, 2002 after extensive renovation work in the premises of the former C2 cinema on St. Pölten's Rathausplatz . It offers a classic cinema hall with 118 seats, a so-called "Beisl-Kino" with 60 seats, in which you can eat and drink during a screening and, since December 7, 2011, a third hall called "Club 3". This is multifunctional: the cinema seating (76 seats) can be sunk under the stage within a short time. This means that the hall can also be used for (standing) concerts or as a “club location”.

The connected cinema bar is operated as a café during the day.

history

The Cinema Paradiso group has been organizing the open air cinema "Film am Dom" in St. Pölten since 1994 . From 1996 selected films were also shown in the former C2 cinema , which had not been in operation for years. This “cinema club” was visited by around 1,500 film enthusiasts, which resulted in the desire to install a permanent art house cinema here. However, it took a lot of persuasion by the association until the public authorities were convinced of the usefulness of a arthouse cinema in St. Pölten:

“There were a lot of skeptics at the beginning. Many did not want to recognize that art house cinema and art house are part of the culture and that there is a need for it here "

- Gerald Knell, Project Manager Cinema Paradiso

In the end the association succeeded and the project could be started with funding from the federal government, the state of Lower Austria and the city of St. Pölten. In 2001 and 2002 the renovation of the old C2 cinema was planned and carried out. The renovation costs of the 440 m² 2-room cinema amounted to around 900,000 euros.

In the first year of its existence, which was regarded as quite successful, the cinema had around 60,000 visitors. In addition, there are around 5,100 guests in the open-air cinema on Rathausplatz directly in front of the Cinema Paradiso, which is an extension of the Cinema Paradiso as part of the “Film and Culture Festival” held annually in the summer months. Since then, the number of visitors has increased annually, so that in 2006 a total of 72,593 moviegoers were counted.

In the “Second Austrian Creative Industry Report” from 2006, the Cinema Paradiso is highlighted as a case study that tries “to counteract the closure of small traditional cinemas” and at the same time focuses on the public supply mandate.

The cinema is operated by CP-Kino-Kultur-BetriebsgesmbH , and depending on the source, the cinema pays between 50% and 70% from its own income, the rest is contributed by the public sector and sponsors.

program

The film program of the Cinema Paradiso includes current films from Europe and the US independent scene, young cinema from Austria and excellent films from the rest of the world. In addition to film festival highlights, documentaries and works by contemporary film and video artists will also be shown. In addition, various classics from film history are shown on the screen, mostly as part of the so-called Sunday "film breakfast".

In addition to the varied cinema program, the Cinema Paradiso is also a platform for (regular) music, literature and cabaret events and discussion forums.

Cinema Paradiso is a member of Europa Cinemas , an association that promotes European film.

Awards

The conversion of the old C2 cinema to the Cinema Paradiso was awarded the Lower Austrian State Culture Prize in 2004.

In 2006 the Cinema Paradiso received the Europa Cinemas Award in the category “ Young Audience Activities ”.

The Cinema Paradiso location in Baden was opened on October 31, 2013, in the premises of the former Beethovenkino (1927–2013) in Beethovengasse 2a. It is run as a program, family and youth cinema. Films for cineastes, families and young audiences are shown in two halls. Hall 1 with 166 seats is on the ground floor, while Hall 2 is on the 1st floor with space for 156 visitors. The cinema is also intended to function as a cultural center in the heart of the city.

As in St. Pölten, the Cinema Bar in Baden is run as a café during the day.

This location is operated by the CP-Kino-Baden-Kultur-BetriebsgembH .

Cinema on demand

In cooperation with the KINO VOD club , Cinema * Paradiso St. Pölten and Baden have been offering curated cinema-on-demand services since the end of 2017 , through which Austrian films can be accessed. This is intended to strengthen Austrian film on the one hand, and to support the cinemas themselves on the other.

Cinema Paradiso group

Since 1994 the Cinema Paradiso group has organized the mostly four-day open air cinema “Film am Dom” on St. Pölten's Cathedral Square. This has around 10,000 visitors annually with free entry.

In recent years, the group has intensified its activities in the field of open air cinema across Austria and in 2006 was among other things at the 10th WACHAUfilmFESTIVAL in Krems an der Donau , at the Summer Cinema (T) raum in Wiener Neustadt, at the Alpen-Adria Filmfestival in Gmünd in Carinthia and also represented during the summer at Sparkassenplatz in Innsbruck .

Artistic cinema Wr. Neustadt

In 2005 an initiative was started to set up a Cinema Paradiso art house cinema in Wiener Neustadt , among others with the support of celebrities such as Josef Hader , Roland Düringer and Wolfgang Murnberger , but this project has so far failed for financial reasons.
