Production and Background

The shooting took place from April to June 2017 in Vienna , Lower Austria and Luxembourg. The production was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund , Filmstandort Austria (FISA), CINE ART Steiermark and the Film Fund Luxembourg . The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation was involved . The film was produced by Austrian Prisma Film , coproducer was Paul Thiltges Distributions from Luxembourg . Gregor Kienel was responsible for the sound, Alfred Mayerhofer for the costume design, Katharina Wöppermann for the production design and Fredo Roeser for the make-up.

Director and screenwriter Christian Frosch explained that he saw the production not as a historicizing, but as a political film. He did not want to recount the crimes of the Nazi regime , but rather to understand how the various groups of perpetrators, victims and bystanders in the Republic of Austria represented and continue to present themselves. Here you can see how the Austrian narrative works. It would not be based on repression, but deliberately lied and veiled, thus making the perpetrators victims and declaring the victims to be the real culprits.

reception

In his review for Friday , Jens Balkenborg writes that Murer - the anatomy of a process "is not" another Nazi film "" but "historical precision cinema par excellence." Frosch brings the "historical impossibility of the Murer case" with "a sober one Staging and an inner, almost incidentally creeping tension [...] into a filmic form ”and dissect it“ with medical meticulousness ”. The “polyphonic narrative” is put together “bit by bit to form a harrowing picture of time”.
