action

The Indonesian Adi Rukun is 44 years old and the brother of someone who died in the mass murder of members and sympathizers of the Indonesian Communist Party . In the course of his work as an optometrist , he speaks to a few people about this part of Indonesia's history, which has not yet been processed on site. Among his interlocutors are perpetrators, including the head of the death squad at the time , and collaborators , some of whom are public officials , but also family members. Although his own mother advises against the investigation, he confronts senior officials with questions about their specific roles as well as questions about repentance . His own uncle turns out to be a collaborator who was indirectly involved in the death of Adi's brother as a prison guard. The only person who asks for forgiveness does so on behalf of their father, who declines all responsibility.

reception

The Look of Silence , like The Act of Killing, was received very positively and received dozens of international awards. These include prizes from the Berlin International Film Festival , the Gotham Awards , the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the South by Southwest Festival .
