action

The film tells of the difficult childhood of seven-year-old Adrian, who grew up in an extreme environment in Salzburg . His mother Helga and her friends are addicted to heroin , and his birth father died before Adrian was born. Helga tries to hide her dependence from her son, whom she loves more than anything and for whom she wants to be the best possible mother. She is torn between her resolve to take good care of her son and the need to quench her inner emptiness with drug use. Adrian enjoys going to school and is a good student. In his free time he plays on the outskirts of Salzburg and enjoys spending a lot of time with his mother. He also likes her partner Günter.

The fact that the two are alternately exuberant and euphoric on the one hand and tired and depressed on the other because of their drug addiction is normal for Adrian, he knows no other life. The little money that is available is spent on heroin, so poverty is also part of everyday life. When everything becomes too much for Adrian, he takes refuge in a fantasy world . Helga tries again and again unsuccessfully to get rid of drugs. Mr. Hütter from the youth welfare office can, with Adrian's help, initially play normal everyday life over and over again. However, when her drug dealer Michael Mazidis, known as "The Greek", dies in her apartment, the police step in and Helga has to get clean for good if she doesn't want to lose her son, which she finally manages with support.

Production and Background

The shooting took place from April 20 to May 25, 2016 in Salzburg and Baden-Württemberg , the location for the apartment was the General-Keyes-Siedlung ( USFA-Wohnhaussiedlung General-Keyes-Straße ) in the Salzburg district of Liefering . The film was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the State of Salzburg and the Baden-Württemberg Media and Film Society , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation and Südwestrundfunk were involved . The film was produced by RitzlFilm and Lailaps Pictures GmbH . Bertin Molz was responsible for the sound, Monika Gebauer for the costume design and Veronika Merlin for the production design.

The film has autobiographical traits, Goiginger dealt with his own childhood in it, the initial spark for the project for him was the death of his mother, who had been clean for years at the time, in July 2012. His stepfather Günter Goiginger was at his side for advice After he was also able to overcome addiction, he has since worked for an NGO that helps addicts.

The film was released on DVD in 2019 as part of the Edition Österreichischer Film von Hoanzl and the Standard .

Awards and nominations

reception

The film received almost exclusively positive reviews.

Katrin Nussmayr wrote in the daily newspaper Die Presse that Altenberger managed to convey the mother's inner conflict - on the one hand, the inner emptiness and depression, on the other hand, the uncompromising love for her child - to the outside world. Goiginger staged honestly and sensitively, without pathos, without glossing over the misery and without driving on the path of pity. The story is painful and upsetting, especially since it really happened. Only for the end of the film does Goiginger allow himself a dramaturgical intensification in the form of a Christian therapy program in order to remind of the possibility of an exit.

Kaspar Heinrich said in Spiegel Online that you don't have to know anything about the autobiographical level in order to consider The Best of All Worlds to be a successful film. “But Goiginger's performance demands all the more respect to look at one's own fate with such a beneficial and astonishing distance. [...] The result is an unusual and therefore particularly disturbing perspective. The child's perspective: in this case the best of all possible perspectives. "

According to Film Austria, the film was the second most successful film of the Austrian cinema year 2017 after Wilde Maus and was awarded the Austrian Ticket .
