The Hunted is a historical and fantastic novel by Wolfgang Hohlbein published in 2004 and the seventh volume of the Chronicle of the Immortals . The story of two vampires in search of the secret of their origins takes place during the siege of Malta in 1565.

action

After far too many decades of suffering and killing, vampires Andrej Delãny and Abu Dun have settled on the island of Malta . Andrej is now officially a Knight of the Order of Malta , while his Nubian companion has found a family in the young widow Julia and her adventurous son Pedro. However, when the Ottomans are preparing an attack on the island, the two vampyres are sent to Constantinople by Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette to spy on the huge siege fleet. They succeed in doing this, but on the retreat they are exposed by another vampire who apparently works for the Turks and have to flee across the sea with the last of their strength.

Back in Malta, Andrej has only bad news to deliver: the invasion fleet is much larger than expected and armed with cannons and loads of gunpowder. And while la Valette is organizing the defense of the island, Andrej and Abu Dun are horrified to find that the vampire from Constantinople has followed them ...

background

With Jean Parisot de la Valette a historical figure of the 16th century appears again in the Chronicle of the Immortals. The Grand Master of the Maltese is generally attributed to having saved Malta and thus perhaps all of Europe from the advance of the Ottomans. Today's capital Valletta is named after him.

In addition to la Valette, Sir Oliver Starkey, mentioned in the book, is a historically guaranteed personality; he was the last English-speaking Knight of Malta and the only one who was buried in the crypt of St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta without ever having been a Grand Master of the order.
