The Chronicle of the Immortals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chronicle of the Immortals is a cycle of historical and fantastic novels by the German author Wolfgang Hohlbein . It essentially deals with the adventures of the vampire Andrej Delãny and his comrade-in-arms Abu Dun , who have traveled through Europe over the past centuries in search of the secret of their origins, encountering ever new dangers and experiencing various significant events in European history.

The story takes up various ideas of vampyres and other mythical creatures, but also bears traits of the modern Highlander myth.

Framework story

Transylvania in the 15th century : the swordsman Andrej Delãny returns to his home village in the Borsã Valley after years of exile . He finds the small settlement whose inhabitants once chased him away in disgrace and is now just a deserted place. The corpses of the villagers are piled up in the nearby castle, including Andrej's only son Marius.

After burying his child and taking care of young Frederic, who was able to escape the enemy captors, the two set off in search of the remaining villagers who were kidnapped by the church inquisitor Domenicus. He and his companions, three knights clad in gold, hunt for “ demons ” all over Eastern Europe . Frederic is only now finding out that he and Andrej were the reason for the attack on the village, because they are vampyrs, almost immortal supermen, who neither diseases nor most weapons can permanently harm and who draw on the life force of others for their own to extend.

While searching for the Borsã survivors, Andrej soon encounters the Nubian pirate and slave trader Abu Dun. Although the two men are initially hostile to each other, they will be bound to each other for a very long time. In the course of time they travel through half of Europe, meet other vampires, including Vlad Ţepeş and the Blood Countess , witness the siege of Vienna and the Turkish attack on Malta , meet ancient Egyptian gods and travel to the far north to the Vikings, where they are meet the fallen god Loki. The two pursued him via Spain to London in 1666 in order to kill him.

Factory history

Hohlbein began working on the chronicle in 1998. In the following year the first volume was published by Ullstein Verlag , followed by another volume every year. A comic adaptation was made for the first volume, Am Abgrund , and was awarded the Sondermann Prize . It is also very successful in France, where the comic was published in 2005. Therefore, there will soon be a Spanish and a US version. The Chronicle of the Immortals was to be continued in April 2007 with The Death Ship , instead the episode volume Blood War was published . The Demon Ship followed at the end of 2007 . The plot of The Death Ship was split into Blood War and The Demon Ship because it would not have found a place in a volume.

Here is the blood of war a very special formation Background: Originally Hohlbein had planned this volume as a further chronicles band that action initially but a divided into several episodes audiobook series tailored (with Styx released). In the Hardcover Association, his unabridged original stories have now been collected in printed form for the first time. In five consecutive episodes , Blutkrieg tells the adventures that Andrej and Abu Dun experience between volumes 8 and 9. In The Demon Ship , the story continues where it left off in Blood War .
