The Blood Countess is a historical-fantastic novel by Wolfgang Hohlbein published in 2004 and the sixth volume of the Chronicle of Immortals . The story of two vampires in search of the secret of their origins takes place in 16th century Eastern Europe .

action

On their journey through Europe, the vampires Andrej Delãny and Abu Dun stumble upon a remote village whose residents claim to be terrorized by a vicious woman who lives in the ruins of a remote mansion. Farmer Ulric blames this “blood countess” for the disappearance of several young women, while others see her as a benefactress. The two warriors go in search of the woman, but first come across a gigantic white owl in the forest and a little later a mysterious warrior named Blanche.

When they finally reach the dilapidated mansion of the Blood Countess, Andrei is stunned to find that she is none other than Maria, his great love, whom he had thought dead for decades.

background

This volume of the Chronicle of the Immortals takes up some aspects of the legend about the so-called "Blood Countess" Erzsébet Báthory , but for the most part presents them in a completely different context. As in the case of Vlad III. Drăculea , most of the bloody stories about the Countess are not documented and her countless murders were probably carried out in a different way than is generally assumed. The claim that she bathed in the blood of her victims is completely unfounded.
