Milomir Kovač (born October 21, 1962 in Foča , Yugoslavia ) is a German specialist veterinarian and surgeon . He deals with equine diseases and is the author of textbooks . Since 2007 he has been chief physician at the " New Century " veterinary clinic in Moscow . In October 2013, Milomir Kovač was awarded the title of ProfessorHonoris Causa ” at the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology for outstanding achievements in the field of equine medicine in the Russian Federation .

In April 2014, Kovač was awarded the "Golden Scalpel", the most prestigious award from the Russian Veterinary Society.

Life and career

Kovač was born on October 21, 1962 in Foča ( Yugoslavia ). In 1980 he graduated from medical high school. He graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Sarajevo as the best of his class in 1987 and was awarded the gold medal of the University of Sarajevo. After graduating from the university, he worked from 1987 to 1992 as assistant professor at the Institute for Pathophysiology of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Sarajevo. In 1990 he completed his advanced training in radiation biology at the University of Sarajevo with honors. He defended his scientific work and received the title Master of Veterinary Medicine (MSc) for it. At the University of Belgrade, he wrote and defended his dissertation in 1993, for which he received the title of Doctor of Science (PhD).

In 1994 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Immunology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Greifswald (Germany). From 1995 to 2007 he worked as a research assistant and veterinarian at the Hochmoor animal clinic and the Bergische Tierklinik - Heiligenhaus at two leading horse clinics in Germany.

In 1998 he was awarded the title “ Specialist for Horses ” at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover . After passing the state examination at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Giessen in 2004, he received his license to practice medicine as a veterinarian.

Since 2007 Kovač has been working at the " New Century " veterinary clinic in Moscow as the only full-time equine surgeon in the Russian Federation. He was the first to start performing colic surgeries on horses. Over six years, 200 such surgeries were performed with a survival rate of over 82%. In addition, he was the first in the Russian Federation to begin performing laparoscopic surgery for cryptorchidism and cryosurgery for the removal of abdominal and skin tumors in horses. He is also the first in the Russian Federation to use PRP techniques and the culture of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of tendons and ligament injuries in horses. In collaboration with József Tóth, he was the first in the Russian Federation to perform a pars plana vitrectomy on horses with equine recurrent uveitis .

Since 2009 he has been working as a senior lecturer in equine medicine at the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology, and the first Russian advanced training intensive course for veterinarians.

Kovac wrote a total of five books on equine diseases and is the author of 70 scientific publications in the field of equine medicine. His books "Colic Diseases" and "Orthopedic Diseases of Horses - Modern Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment" are the first textbooks in the field of equine medicine to be published in Russian-speaking countries. As textbooks for college students, these books have been approved by the Ministry of Education in the Russian Federation. Since 2007 he has worked as a journalist and writes for the Russian magazine "Pferdewelt".
