The University of Sarajevo ( Bosnian Univerzitet u Sarajevu ) is one of the two universities of Sarajevo , the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The University of Sarajevo was founded in 1949, but individual faculties existed before that (from 1940). In 1977 the Faculty of Islamic Theology was established. In 2009, 40,300 people studied at the 23 faculties and academies, 27,400 of whom were regular students.

The university maintains numerous international collaborations, in Germany a. a. to the University of Mannheim (since 1971), to the Humboldt University of Berlin and to six other universities.

The university is a member of the network of Balkan universities (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro).

The university is multi-ethnic (Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs). The University of East Sarajevo was founded in the suburb of Lukavica in the Republika Srpska , which also follows the tradition of the University of Sarajevo. Around 10,000 people study there.
