Jürgen Wolters

Jürgen Wolters (born June 24, 1940 in Stuttgart ; † November 21, 2015 ) was a German economist (statistics and econometrics) and professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Wolters studied 1960-1966 mathematics at the Technical University of Stuttgart (diploma). He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Empirical Economic Research at the University of Mannheim . In 1972 he was at Heinz King at the Faculty of Economics and Statistics with the dissertation linear spectralanalytic estimation of dynamic systems to Dr. rer. pole. PhD. In the same year his work was awarded the prize for scientific work from the IHK in Mannheim.

He became a research assistant and completed his habilitation in 1978 with the thesis Stochastic Dynamic Properties of Linear Econometric Models . Afterwards he received the Venia Legendi for Economics and Econometrics and from 1979 to 1980 he represented the Chair for Economics and Econometrics II at the University of Mannheim. From 1980 he was a temporary professor for economics, in particular applied econometrics, at the University of Mannheim. In 1982 Wolters became Professor of Statistics at the Free University of Berlin. After his retirement, he worked as a research fellow at the Swiss Institute for Foreign Trade and Applied Economic Research at the University of St. Gallen .

Wolters was listed among the top emeriti in the 2011 Handelsblatt ranking in Economics. His students included Torsten Harms , Uwe Hassler , Oliver Holtemöller , Heike Joebges , Bernd Lucke , Dieter Nautz and Enzo Weber .

He was married and had two children.

Jürgen Wolters died in 2015 at the age of 75. His grave is in the Dahlem Forest Cemetery in Berlin.

Memberships and cooperations

Wolters was a member of the Verein für Socialpolitik (from 1988 to 1991 chairman of the econometric committee), of the German Statistical Society (from 1999 to 2003 chairman of the committee for empirical economic research and applied econometrics), the Econometric Society , the European Economic Association and International Statistical Institute . He was active as an expert in a variety of ways.

From 1988 to 1998 he was co-editor of the journal for economics and social sciences and from 1998 to 2002 of the journal Konjektivenpolitik . Since 2004 he has been co-editor of International Economics and Economic Policy . He was also a member of the scientific advisory boards of the Ifo studies and the Statistical Papers .

From 1998 to 2006 Wolters was a member of the board of trustees of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin. From 2000 to 2005 he was research director for macroeconometrics there. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees for Money and Currency of the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Federal Ministry of Finance in Frankfurt am Main. At the Deutsche Bundesbank he was also a member of the research advisory board from 2004 to 2007.

Wolters was a member of the International Advisory Board of the Kijiv School of Economics (Ukraine).
