Andrei Sergeyevich Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky ( Russian Андрей Сергеевич Михалков-Кончаловский ., Scientific transliteration Andrei Mikhalkov-Sergeevič Končalovskij , often Andrei Konchalovsky ; * 20th August 1937 in Moscow ) is a Russian theater - and film director .

Life

He is the son of the poet Sergei Michalkow , who wrote the lyrics of the Russian and Soviet national anthems, and the older brother of the director Nikita Michalkow ; the painter Pyotr Konchalovsky is his grandfather. At first he wanted to become a musician and made it into a veritable pianist. But then he attended the WGIK , the leading state film school in the Soviet Union , where he studied with Michail Romm. At the WGIK he met Andrei Tarkowski , with whom he made several films.

In his feature film debut Perwy utschitel ( The First Teacher , 1965) Michalkow-Konchalowski filmed a novel by Tschingis Aitmatow about post-revolutionary southern Russia. The black and white film Istoriya Asi Klyachinoy, kotoraya lyubila, da ne vyshla zamuzh ( Asja's luck ), made in 1966, was only released a decade later because it did not meet the strict Soviet censorship requirements. Dvoryanskoe gnezdo ( A Nobility's Nest , 1969) - a study of the nineteenth century aristocracy - was known for the beauty of its imagery, but it was also criticized for being too mannered. The adaptation of the Chekhov play Uncle Vanya (1970) is considered by many to be one of the best films in the Russian language. But it was only with Romans o vlyublyonnykh ( Romance for lovers , 1974) and Sibiriade (1979) that Mikhalkov-Konchalowski rose to the ranks of world-famous filmmakers. He then moved to the United States and made arthouse films in English, including Maria's Lovers (1984), Runaway Train (1985), Duet for One (1986) and Homer and Eddie (1989). To the great disappointment of his fans and the international film critics , Michalkow-Konchalowski switched to mainstream in 1989 and shot the action film Tango & Cash with Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell .

In the early 1990s he returned to Russia and directed several theater productions, including the highly acclaimed productions of Chekhov's Die Möwe and Strindberg's Miss Julie . He had previously directed plays and operas in several European cities.

Today Michalkow-Konchalowski lives in Moscow again and occasionally makes short trips to Hollywood for mainstream TV productions ( The Adventures of Odysseus (1997), The Lion in Winter (2003)).

In 2002 his Russian-French co-production Das Irrenhaus - a theming of the Chechen war - received an award at the Venice Film Festival . At the end of June 2017 he received the honorary award of the Peace Prize of German Films for his life's work.
