action

Alfie is a handsome young New York chauffeur. Always elegantly dressed, he describes himself as a little fashion whore. He is the main actor and sometimes the film's narrator when addressing the audience directly.

Alfie admires and collects women, each seems like a small work of art that needs to be hoarded for a short time. He doesn't want to be satisfied with just one. He has a purely sexual relationship with the married Dorie. The two enjoy themselves in the backseat of the limousine, but when Dorie wants more from Alfie and considers leaving her husband for him, Alfie makes sure that they part ways. He also has a loose relationship with Julie, a single mother with a five-year-old son. After finding a thong from Dory on him, she ends the relationship.

Alfie and his work colleague and best friend Marlon plan to buy up their boss's limo rental and give it a new look. Marlon has been separated from his girlfriend Lonette since she caught him with an old friend. Alfie takes care of the crazy couple. After an evening of long conversation, Lonette and Alfie make a big mistake and sleep together. Lonette then returns to Marlon, who learns nothing of the slip of the two. The two try again and Marlon proposes to her. After the separation from Julie and the stress around Lonette and Marlon, Alfie is plagued by a lack of "stamina" at times. He thinks a lot about impotence and death and whether the two are almost the same.

Weeks later, Lonette stands in front of Alfie's door, dissolved. She is pregnant. You decide to have an abortion. Alfie drives her to the hospital. There Lonette thinks differently, but lets Alfie believe she had an abortion. Because of his impotence, Alfie can also be examined. He gets a reassuring diagnosis, his erection problems were due to the psychological stress of recent times.

Some time later, Marlon suddenly quits and leaves Alfie a letter. He moves into the country with Lonette without prior notice or personal farewell. Meanwhile, Alfie meets Nikki and starts an affair with her. Nikki is a very intense person who indulges in drug and alcohol consumption. Alfie soon feels overwhelmed by her mood swings. On the side, he has an affair with Liz, an older woman he met a long time ago and with whom he gets to know the joys of absinthe. He ends his relationship with Nikki when it robs him more and more of his strength.

By chance he meets Julie with her new boyfriend. She looks happy. Alfie falls deeper and deeper into a depression and thoughts about where his life should actually lead. In order to be able to think and to regain himself, he goes to the country and visits Marlon and Lonette. There he initially only meets Lonette and learns that she has a son. Since Marlon and Lonette are black and the child has a white tint, Marlon found out about the affair between Lonette and Alfie. When Marlon comes home, Alfie wants to apologize to him, but Marlon sends him away.

After this fateful meeting, Alfie is devastated. He clings to the actually only sexual relationship with Liz. He surprises her in her apartment with a bouquet of flowers inspired by her diverse character, with the intention of offering her a permanent relationship. She is visibly touched, but still asks him to come back another time, through which he learns that she has a visit from another man. When asked what this man has that Alfie doesn't have, she replies that he's younger. In view of the already large age difference between him and Liz and the irony of the situation, he quickly leaves the apartment.

At the end of the film, Alfie summarizes his life so far and asks himself the big existential questions: What did I want to achieve? What have i achieved? What is life about? Actually from the material side he has everything he needs to live, but he has no peace of mind.

criticism

"... in contrast to the original, aims less at a criticism of male recklessness towards the sex that is no longer so weak, but focuses on the illusion of a fashion and fun-obsessed urban lifestyle and the fear of real feelings."
