action
George Banks, a San Marino- based entrepreneur , is shocked. His daughter Annie announces that she wants to marry the yuppie Bryan MacKenzie. But this is only a freelance "communications engineer". George is immediately prejudiced against his future son-in-law; considers him conceited, which is not confirmed by Bryan's visit.
George and his wife Nina visit Bryan's parents where an embarrassing situation arises when George rummages through the hosts' records to investigate possible criminal activities. Although he refuses to allow Bryan's parents to contribute to the cost of the wedding , he criticizes every cost estimate. He is even happy to hear that a distant relative has since passed away - that lowers costs. Eventually, George freaks out in a supermarket and is arrested. His wife Nina pays the bail only after George promises to be calm.
The figure of the party organizer Franck Eggelhoffer, who hardly speaks English , provides additional comedy .
The wedding day comes, and an argument between Annie and Bryan is mediated by George. He understands that his daughter is an adult and has to leave the family home; he accepts it.
Reviews
Roger Ebert described the comedy in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 20, 1991 as "a film with a heart". Steve Martin is one of the most "sensitive" actors in Ebert's opinion. The film is not as "ambiguous" and "revealing" as Eine Wahnsinnsfamilie , but it contains a lot of laughs and creates a "good feeling" throughout.
“Amusing family film with a star role for star comedian Steve Martin. The comedy revamped by new gags remains true to the spirit of the 50s in the transfiguration of the ideal family world and the wedding. "
Awards
Alan Silvestri won the BMI Film Music Award for his film music . Kimberly Williams and Steve Martin were nominated for the MTV Movie Award ; Kieran Culkin was nominated for the Young Artist Award .
