Anne Ramsey
Anne Ramsey (born March 27, 1929 in Omaha , Nebraska , † August 11, 1988 in Los Angeles , California ), born Anne Mobley , was an American actress .
Life
Born the daughter of an insurance manager, Ramsey grew up in Omaha, where she attended Bennington College, where her interest in the theater was aroused. In the 1950s she starred in several Broadway productions.
In 1954 Ramsey married the actor Logan Ramsey , with whom she moved to Philadelphia , where she founded the Philadelphia Theater of the Living Arts .
It wasn't until the early 1970s that her career as a character actress began in Hollywood . In addition to numerous guest appearances in television series and movies , she was best known for two roles: as Mama Fratelli in Steven Spielberg's Die Goonies and - alongside Danny DeVito - as Mrs. Lift in Schmeiß 'Mama from the Train! . She was nominated for an Oscar ( Best Supporting Actress ) and a Golden Globe Award in 1988 for the impersonation of the mother of Danny DeVito's character . For both films she also received the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Film .
She and her husband appeared in five films, including The Sporting Club (1971) and Meet the Hollowheads (1989), her first and last film roles.
A hallmark of Ramsey's late films was the harsh voice and slurred pronunciation that was caused by resection of parts of her tongue and jawbone for cancer in the mid-1980s.
In 1988, esophageal cancer returned and she died at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 59 .
