action
The arrogant chemistry professor Eli Michaelson is awarded the Nobel Prize. He wants to fly to Stockholm with his wife Sarah, a psychiatrist who works for the FBI , and his son Barkley for the awards, but Barkley misses the plane because he spent the night with the artist City Hall, whom he met the day before. When Barkley arrives at his parents' house, he is ambushed and kidnapped by Thaddeus James. He's asking for $ 2 million to be released . Eli Michaelson initially doesn't take the blackmailer's calls seriously and believes that Barkley is the caller. Only when he sends a cut thumb, does he turn on the police.
Thaddeus tells Barkley that he is his half-brother, that Eli was having an affair with his mother and that her husband, also a chemist and friend of Eli, killed himself after his wife became pregnant by Eli. In addition, Eli would have stolen his friend's ideas, so that he was wrongly awarded the Nobel Prize. Then Barkley and Thaddeus work together and together they manage to successfully collect the ransom when handing over the money. They split the money and split up.
Months later, Thaddeus moves into the apartment above the Michaelsons' garage as a subtenant and wins the trust and sympathy of Eli, whom he admires. When it turns out that he worked with City and tricked them into Barkley, and falsified evidence emerges that Barkley himself orchestrated the kidnapping and cut off a man's thumb that the kidnapper sent, he confides in his mother. The two turn the tables and deprive Thaddeus of his share of the booty by kidnapping Eli and City.
