action

While Apollo 11 is on the way to the moon , father Bellamy decides to drive with his son from a small town in California to the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho to be there when the moon landing takes place. Washington Bellamy is an adventurous man, but his wife, Katherine, has had panic attacks since she lost her unborn child in a car accident and has not left home for the past seven years. And for Andy, her son, the whole thing is a great adventure, as he has never traveled by car or left his hometown.

Father and son set off spontaneously in a 1949 Pontiac on the 1,776-mile trip without telling their mother. When she learns what her family is up to, she overcomes her fear and follows them in the other car, an Amphicar 770 . Father and son experience adventures, including an engine breakdown, whereupon they steal an exchange engine. For the mother the journey becomes a journey into life, she unfolds her buried senses and abilities.

At the destination, the father drives the car to scrap at a crater. At the same moment the mother arrives, the family is reunited, and the burden of the mother's trauma is overcome. Together they chase each other with the police in the remaining car, up to the border river with Canada, which they cross with the amphibious car while the US police stop on the bank.

criticism

"From a road movie full of discoveries and insights, a bizarre parable develops about the unity of the (American) family, which is bold and unreal like a fairy tale, but draws a certain charm from it."
