Justified is an American crime series with drama elements that was produced from 2010 to 2015. It is based on the character of the US marshal Raylan Givens from Elmore Leonard's (1925–2013) novels Pronto , Full Risk and Raylan and his short story Fire in the Hole .

content

The Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens provoked a contract killer from the local drug syndicate to pull his pistol in Miami and shot him as part of a justified self-defense. For his own protection, he will by Lexington in his home state of Kentucky added, where his former mentor Art Mullen , the local Marshal Office conducts. Givens soon finds himself confronted with the lawless goings-on of the backwoodsmen and unscrupulous family clans in his old home, Harlan County . As a “modern cowboy” he tends to break the rules and use robust investigation and search methods. At the same time, he has to deal with his failed marriage and his father relationship in his private life.

production

The working title of the series was Lawman . The series was produced by Elmore Leonard and Timberman / Beverly Prods. by Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly on Sony Pictures Television . The action is set in southeast Kentucky with a focus on Lexington and Harlan County. For cost reasons, however, the shooting took place in California . Only the opening credits were recorded in and around Harlan . In order to compensate for deficits in authenticity and to allow more local color to flow into the series, the production team increasingly resorted to local consultants in later seasons. Accompanying this, authors and individual actors such as Walton Goggins completed on-site research.

The soundtrack for the series in - according to the TV series web portal serienjunkies.de - "typical southern states sound" consists on the one hand of heavily blues-heavy roots rock pieces such as Harlan County Line by Dave Alvin or Protection by Lucinda Williams , on the other hand - some of the more popular country and bluegrass songs such as Stand by Your Man (in a cover version by Beverly Staunton) or You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive . The title track is Long Hard Times to Come by Gangstagrass feat. TONEz - a hybrid of locally popular bluegrass and hip-hop . The folk ballad You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive was used as the unofficial season finale motto in several versions - that of Dave Alvin, that of Brad Paisley and that of Ruby Friedman .

"The dialogues of the series are in the tradition of Elmore Leonard's stories and are among the best that has been seen on television for a long time."

- Sven Sakowitz : Taz.de

“It would be a snap to describe the new series in the Kabel 1 program as a modern western blend because of this classic opening - even if the main character is constantly walking through the picture with a cowboy hat. 'Justified' is rather dark pulp fiction from the US hinterland. "

- Denis Krick : Spiegel Online

“Despite some hardship, Justified cannot be accused of excessive violence. The series has a rare ironic tone. If Givens finds the time to tell a bad joke in his ridiculous cowboy outfit, despite a shotgun in his back, it comes to mind that he is a character of Elmore Leonard. "

- Peter Sich : Sueddeutsche.de
