action

The death of his twin brother Brady brings the respected philosophy professor Bill Kincaid back to his sleepy hometown Little Dixie after years. When he arrived in the small town in Oklahoma , he discovered that his brother had only pretended to have been murdered by a crossbow, but was actually still alive and the news of his death was only an excuse to take Bill home to trick into.

Brady, together with his friend Bolger and the help of the Jewish drug baron Pug Rothbaum, has gained a foothold in the drug business and runs his own marijuana plantation . Due to the high quality of the products, Brady's grass varieties are out of competition and so he decides to claim the entire drug market in the area for himself. In order to avoid any problems with this, Pug Rothbaum is to be murdered. The clever trick of the two crooks is that while Brady and Bolger meet with Rothbaum for the murder and fake an anti-Semitic murder crime on site, his twin brother Bill should act as an alibi by acting as Brady's doppelganger for one day . Events tumble when the Rothbaum murder hit the press and Brady was shot a short time later.

After Brady's death, his twin brother Bill tries to sell the plantation in order to raise money for Brady's wife and unborn son. Negotiations with a local drug dealer lead to a dispute and Bill is hit in the back with a crossbow bolt. He survives the shot thanks to the courageous help of Bolger, who was saved from a knife attack by Brady in prison and now regrets that he was unable to save Brady in his fatal exchange of fire. At the end of the film, Bill is sitting with his newfound love, Janet, in his mother's garden, recovering from the injuries he has suffered.

Reviews

“Tim Blake Nelson […] returned to his homeland Oklahoma and shot a bizarre mix of love story, comedy and gangster thriller there.
[...] Edward Norton ironed out the old-fashioned plot and the overdrawn supporting roles with his professional enthusiasm. Not a big hit, but exhilarating fun for dark rainy days. "

- Johannes Sträter on Spiegel Online

“Actor and director Tim Blake Nelson is actually not wrong with the plan [...] to direct a comedy in the wacky Coen Brothers manner. [...] - but unfortunately the story is lagging a lot. "

- Dirk Hoffmann on zelluloid.de

“The fact that Norton can still maintain dignity between all the blasts deserves the greatest respect. Without his commitment, Leaves Of Grass would implode at the latest with Bill's forced plea for reconciliation. "

- Jan Hamm on filmstarts.de

"The part I did not like was the anti-Semitism in the film."

- Ed Koch on The Villager
