TransLink (formally known as the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority ) is a public transportation company responsible for almost all transportation matters in the Metro Vancouver region in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It was founded in 1998 by the provincial government and succeeded BC Transit. Individual services are also offered in the neighboring Fraser Valley Regional District .

buses

Bus services in the Vancouver area are operated by two companies. Coast Mountain Bus Company , a subsidiary of TransLink, operates bus routes in almost every municipality in the metropolitan area, as well as the Vancouver trolleybus in Vancouver. West Vancouver Blue Bus is owned by the City of West Vancouver , and its timetables, fares and routes are coordinated with other TransLink services.

Within the city of Vancouver, the buses run on a grid-like route network - while the trolleybuses mostly run in a north-south direction, diesel buses are mostly used on the east-west connections. Outside the city, the bus network takes the form of a hub-and-spoke system . Express buses run between downtown Vancouver and other regional centers.

SkyTrain

The driverless, rail-bound local transport system SkyTrain is the backbone of local public transport in the Greater Vancouver region. The first route was opened in 1986 with a view to Expo 86 . In addition to the city center, the Expo Line and Millennium Line also provide access to the suburbs of Burnaby , New Westminster and Surrey . The Canada Line , opened in 2009, connects Vancouver with Richmond and Vancouver International Airport . The Expo Line and the Millennium Line are operated by linear motors , while the newer Canada Line trains with conventional drives. The Evergreen Line between Burnaby and Coquitlam is due to open in 2016 .

railroad

The West Coast Express is a local train that connects Vancouver Waterfront Station to Port Moody , Coquitlam , Port Coquitlam , Pitt Meadows , Maple Ridge and Mission . From Monday to Friday, five trains run in the main load direction during both peak times.

Ferries

SeaBus is a passenger ferry across the Burrard Inlet between Vancouver and North Vancouver . It is operated by the Coast Mountain Bus Company and is integrated into the transport network. Albion Ferry is a free automobile ferry across the Fraser River between Maple Ridge and Langley .

Tariff system

The fares on the TransLink network are based on a zone system. Each municipality is located in one of three zones and the tariffs are calculated based on the number of zones passed through.

Zone 3

The zone tariff applies on working days from the start of operations until 6:30 p.m. Until the end of operations and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the entire area is considered a single zone. Single tickets, tickets with 10 journeys, day tickets, monthly subscriptions and student subscriptions are available.

Streets

TransLink is also responsible for the maintenance of the 2200 km long main road network in the Lower Mainland . In addition, TransLink is also responsible for four bridges, the Knight Street Bridge , the Pattullo Bridge , the Westham Island Bridge and the Golden Ears Bridge . For large projects, TransLink takes over the coordination and financing, for smaller projects TransLink contributes up to half of the costs, while the affected municipalities take on the other half. TransLink is also involved in half of the construction of cycle paths .
