As the Lower Mainland (dt. Lower Mainland ), the region is Vancouver south of the Canadian province of British Columbia , respectively. It encompasses the entire metropolitan area of Metro Vancouver and parts of the adjacent Fraser Valley Regional District . According to the 2001 census, over 2.2 million people live in the region. 16 of the 30 most populous municipalities in the province are located here.

The term Lower Mainland was never used for official purposes, but has been in everyday language since the earliest recorded European settlement to denote the densely populated area on the lower reaches of the Fraser River , between the North Shore Mountains to the north and the border to the US is in the south.

Lower Mainland is also the name of an ecoregion bordered by the Coast Mountains and the Cascade Range , which has a much warmer and wetter climate ( temperate rainforest ) than the areas further north and east of British Columbia.
