Maple Ridge is a district municipality ( english district municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is east of Vancouver , between the Fraser River in the south and Pitt Lake in the north. To the west of the parish is Pitt Meadows . Maple Ridge is part of the Metro Vancouver district .
history
Maple Ridge was officially incorporated on September 12, 1874, making it the fifth oldest church in British Columbia, after New Westminster , Victoria , Langley, and Chilliwack .
Since the mid-1980s, Maple Ridge has recorded above-average population growth, no less than 12.5% between 1996 and 2001 alone. In 1995 the community stepped out of the more rural Fraser Valley Regional District and moved to urban Metro Vancouver. Due to the 2010 Winter Olympics , which took place in the nearby city of Vancouver , the population of the small provincial town continued into the first decade of the 21st century. This is also reflected in the increased land prices.
Demographics
The 2011 census revealed a population of 76,055 residents for the municipality. The population has increased by 10.3% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in British Columbia only grew by 7.0%.
economy
The early settlers of Maple Ridge were forestry and farming . Even today, forest companies are among the most important employers. Agriculture is characterized by berry plantations, tree nurseries and horse breeding . About two-thirds of all workers commute to Vancouver and other suburbs.
