action

A meteor shower threatens the American Midwest - including the small town of Cottonwood . Mayor Davenport-Baxter plans to move her family to Chicago to better cope with the loss of their son that still appears in her mind's eye. Her daughter Emily is resisting the planned move, also because she wants to graduate from college in Cottonwood.

When several meteorites hit the small town of Cottonwood and destroy numerous buildings, a chunk also struck the nearby forest and caused a tree to topple; he falls on Seth, Emily's friend, and pinches his leg. When he fails to free himself, he asks his girlfriend to pull the tree away with the help of a rope that is previously attached to his wagon. After initial unsuccessful attempts, Emily finally succeeds in freeing her boyfriend. In the meantime, Emily's mother and Seth's father are looking for their children and are able to locate the car with the help of a tracking device . The two teenagers are already on their way home. When another meteorite hits near the road, they pull their car off the road and tumble down the embankment. The parents find the two thanks to the tracking device and take them to the local hospital, where they receive medical care.

Fires broke out in several places as a result of the meteor impacts in Cottonwood and gas pipes were leaking; there is a risk of explosion. The city fathers ask Douglas Mak to turn off the gas supply shut-off valve, as only he knows the exact location. Douglas initially refuses because he does not want to leave his seriously injured wife alone in the hospital. But since more human lives are at stake, he finally lets himself be persuaded - also at the urging of the mayor - to go ahead. He succeeds in turning off the shut-off valve for the gas supply and thus averting the risk of explosion. Meanwhile, his wife succumbs to serious injuries.

Jack Baxter, the mayor's husband and former doctor at the local hospital, - like his wife - cannot get over the accidental death of their son Ricky. Woken up by the chaos and current events, he takes heart and returns to the hospital to offer his help as a doctor.
