White Rock is a small town in the western part of the Canadian province of British Columbia and is located in the southern part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District .
geography
White Rock is located approximately 30 kilometers south of Vancouver and is enclosed on three sides by the Surrey community . The fourth side is on Semiahmoo Bay on the Georgia Strait .
Part of the urban area is the Semiahmoo reserve .
history
The name of the place refers to a white rock around which a story of the Semiahmoo is entwined.
The municipality was not officially founded until 1957. The history of the settlement, however, goes back further, as the area was already a settlement and hunting area of the First Nation before Europeans settled there .
Demographics
The 2011 census revealed a population of 19,339 for the small town. The population has increased by 0.8% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the entire province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time.
politics
The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on April 15, 1957 ( incorporated as City ).
The mayor of the parish is Wayne Baldwin. Together with six other citizens, it forms the council of the small town (council).
economy
Most jobs can be found in trade and transportation. Other important areas of employment are education and health and social affairs.
The median income ( median income ) of an employee from White Rock was C $ 30,197 in 2005, well above the average income of the entire province of British Columbia of C $ 24,867.
Trivia
Various films were shot in the community or in its area. The best known of these is probably the X-Files - The FBI's Scary Cases . Settings for the short film The Railrodder with Buster Keaton were also filmed here. Most of the exterior shots in the Psych series are also shot here. In addition, the film Free Willy 3 was shot in White Rock.
