Leonel de Moura Brizola (born January 22, 1922 in Carazinho , † June 21, 2004 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a left-wing Brazilian politician.

Brizola began his political career in the Getúlio Vargas era and is to this day the first and only politician who has managed to win the gubernatorial elections in two different states (1959 Rio Grande do Sul , 1983 and 1991 Rio de Janeiro ). He was also Vice President and from October 2003 until his death Honorary President of the Socialist International .

Leonel Brizola was born in 1922 in a small town called Curazinha (now Carazinho). He became mayor of Porto Alegre , governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a member of the Brazilian Congress of the now defunct state of Guanabara , and twice governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro. His political influence in Brazilian politics lasted almost 50 years. During the military coup in 1964, Brizola was one of the leaders of the resistance. In May 1980 he founded the Democratic Labor Party, Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT) . In 1989 and 1994 he went into the presidential election campaign as a candidate, but could not prevail against his opponents Fernando Collor de Mello and Fernando Henrique Cardoso . Leonel Brizola died of heart failure in 2004 at the age of 82.
