The Islinger field located in the southern city of Regensburg , 3.5 km straight line from Regensburg Cathedral St. Peter. It extends south of the federal highway 3 between Oberisling and Burgweinting .

During his six-day pastoral journey through Bavaria in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. three days in Regensburg and celebrated Holy Mass on September 12th on the area specially converted for the occasion with around 230,000 people . During the days of the Pope's visit, the approximately 55 hectares of agricultural land were designated as a safety zone in accordance with a general decree of the City of Regensburg and the A3 was closed to traffic on the day of the service in the relevant section.

A 16 meter high cross made of steel and wood, next to which the altar island was located, commemorates this major church event. The cross originally stood further south, but had to be moved around 35 m in November 2006. A small park of 7300 m² is to be built around the cross. The land for the park is owned by the Thurn und Taxis family and leased to the city of Regensburg . The diocese of Regensburg held annually on 12 September, a "prayer on the cross" in memory of the Mass with the Pope.
