DKV canoe station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A DKV canoe station is an overnight stop for canoeists . Canoeing clubs of the German Canoe Association (DKV) offer their club premises and sanitary facilities to canoeists who are traveling through for a small fee. A DKV canoe station is not a campsite , but in most cases a meadow by a boathouse . They are marked by a special board.

Nationwide there are 270 appropriately designated canoe stations. DKV canoe stations are open to both DKV members and non-organized canoeists; Association members usually pay a 25% lower price.

In contrast, the term canoe station in most cases describes a commercial canoe rental .

history

When canoeing became increasingly popular after the First World War, the question of cheap accommodation arose. The tent equipment, if any, consisted of tarpaulin or tents without a floor. Once the canoeists had found a suitable place, straw had to be obtained from a farmer for sleeping and disposed of the next day. Camping was therefore only partially possible in the warmer seasons. Riverside restaurants took advantage of this opportunity by offering canoeists inexpensive overnight accommodation, which was indicated by the sign "Canoe station".

When the tents got better and the canoeists started to camp more and more, the canoe clubs located on the migratory rivers identified this as a "DKV campground" with the appropriate terrain. The sign "Canoe station" slowly lost its importance. At some old inns you can still find it today as a nostalgic memory. As far as they still exist, the inns have adapted to a different audience.

Since fewer and fewer of the existing campsites were accessible from the water, it was discussed in the 1990s to revive a corresponding network. For the German Canoe Day 1995 it was decided to give clubs a corresponding sign under certain conditions and to include them in a list kept by the DKV. However (for legal reasons) the name "DKV-Zeltplatz", but the sign "DKV-Kanu-Station" was reactivated.

Criteria of the DKV canoe stations

The DKV has defined certain criteria that must be met so that an overnight place can be called a "DKV canoe station". These concern the available space, mooring options, sanitary facilities, disposal options, accessibility, cost transparency, the possibility of staying in the boathouse and the like. a. m.
