History of origin
In December 1988 Smudo and Thomas D , who were part of the mostly English rapping combo The Terminal Team , returned from a joint stay in the United States, where they had also performed a few gigs. While their English-language texts had been largely ridiculed, they had received recognition for the German-language rapeseed. After their return, they suggested DJ Hausmarke and And.Ypsilon , who were also members of the Terminal team , that they should consistently appear as a German-speaking band from then on, which was met with approval. Smudo on this:
“From that moment on we translated everything. Really everything. We no longer said “scratch”, but “scratch plates”. Our music was of course no longer called rap, but rather spoken chant. It was a mission. It served our self-discovery. "
Already in 1989 Die Fantastischen Vier had gained a reputation as a good live band with this new direction. In 1991 the record deal with Columbia Records followed , and on August 27 of the same year the album “Jetzt geht's ab” was released, which includes rap pieces as well as so-called skits , short, sketch- like interludes. Shortly before that, the first EP was released with "Hausmeister Thomas D" .
Music video
A music video was created for the song microphone professor , which was shot and produced by Michael Leckebusch in his own home studio in Garlstedt .
reception
“Now it goes off” was a novelty in the German hip-hop scene, which wrote mostly Anglophone texts, and the reactions were correspondingly restrained. Die Fantastischen Vier only achieved their breakthrough in 1992 with the single Die da!?! from the follow-up album "4 wins".
In 1992 "Jetzt geht's ab" was published again and reached number 91 in the German album hit parade.
