Helena Hauff

Helena Hauff is a German music producer and DJ who lives in Hamburg . She is known for her minimalist techno and electro tracks, which she records with analog equipment. Instead of working with digital programs, she works with the analog drum machine Roland TR-808 . Her music is influenced by acid house , EBM and industrial .

Career

Hauff studied art , physics and systematic musicology in Braunschweig. After a year of studies, she returned to her hometown Hamburg and began to play regularly in the Golden Pudel Club . In Hamburg she met the British musician Darren "Actress" Cunningham when she was playing as support for him. Their first EP, Actio Reactio , was released on his label Werkdiscs (part of Ninja Tune ) in 2013 .

In 2015 her debut album Discreet Desires came out , also on Werkdiscs , after she had previously released on other labels. The album reached number 19 on Rolling Stone's list of "20 Best EBM and Electro Albums 2015" .

In 2017 she was the first female winner of BBC Radio 1's “Essential Mix of the Year”.

In 2018, Hauff released their second album, Qualm, on Ninja Tune . Smoke met with wide media coverage. Hauff was z. B. “Artist of the week” at Musikexpress and the time was amazed that such a young musician was interested in the “dirty sound world of the technounderground of earlier days”. In the Spex the album was described as “brave, unadorned, dark, grainy”, and even the Spiegel reported on the “shooting star of the German techno scene”.

Helena Hauff has done many appearances as a DJ in recent years, including a. at Dekmantel Festival, Sónar Festival and Primavera Sound . She performed there alongside a wide variety of artists, such as Nina Kraviz , Jeff Mills and Moodymann , but also Tangerine Dream , Erykah Badu and Jarvis Cocker .
