Slowdive is a British shoegaze band that was initially active between 1989 and 1995 and reunited in 2014.
Band history
The group was founded in Reading in 1989 . After the release of three EPs, which were combined in 1992 on the Blue Day compilation , the debut album Just for a Day was released in September 1991. The second long player Souvlaki followed in May 1993 and is now considered a classic of the Shoegaze movement. Drummer Simon Scott left the band soon after and was replaced by Ian McCutcheon. The last record Pygmalion was released in February 1995.
After Slowdive was dropped from their record label Creation Records in 1995 , Neil Halstead , Rachel Goswell and Ian McCutcheon formed the band Mojave 3 . Halstead and Goswell also both appeared as solo artists. Christian Savill founded the Monster Movie group . Simon Scott released several albums under his own name and with his projects Inner Sleeve and Televise .
Reunion
In early 2014, Slowdive announced on their official website that they were reuniting with their old line-up. Initially, two shows at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona and in London's Village Underground were planned for the end of May 2014 . These were the band's first concerts since May 21, 1994. The announcement also offered the prospect of recording a new album.
During the summer of 2014, further, worldwide festival appearances took place, including on June 8, 2014 at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig and on August 14, 2014 at the Pukkelpop in Hasselt, Belgium . In autumn 2014 they went on a tour through North America. On May 5th, 2017 the band released their first album in 22 years with the eponymous Slowdive .
style
Slowdive were stylistically influenced by noise rock bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine , but also by post-punk and dark wave groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees , The Cure and the Cocteau Twins . They mainly use guitars to create an atmospheric carpet of sound, with the actual songwriting increasingly taking a back seat. From 1993 her style changed a little and more ambient and electronica elements were incorporated into the songs. In particular the album Pygmalion had musical references to the works of Seefeel .
