The Avicii Tribute Concert (also The Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness ) was a concert dedicated to the Swedish musician Avicii alias Tim Bergling, who died on April 20, 2018 . It took place on December 5th, 2019 in the Friends Arena in Stockholm , Sweden and was organized by the Tim Bergling Foundation in cooperation with various companies. The proceeds from the concert were all donated to various foundations that specialize in mental health and suicide prevention.

After Tim Bergling was found dead after a suicide in Muscat , Oman on April 20, 2018 , his family founded the Tim Bergling Foundation , which aims to educate people about the treatment of mental illnesses and suicide prevention. After the posthumous studio album Tim was released in June 2019 , the team around the foundation began planning a concert to be held in honor of the musician. Various companies and brands helped them organize it. The flight company SAS Scandinavian Airlines , the loudspeaker brand Urbanista and the travel company Tallink & Silja Line were the main contributors . In the course of the concert, SAS also offered inexpensive travel arrangements and Urbanista donated 10% of the income for the October month to the foundation. The hotel chains Hotel at Six , Nordic Light Hotel and Quality Hotel Friends also collaborated with the Tim Bergling Foundation.

On September 2, 2019, the industry magazine " Variety " announced for the first time that the concert would take place on December 5, 2019 with opening sets from various DJs, a 30-piece band and over 19 guest musicians. Avicii's father Klas Bergling explained that Avicii had always intended to perform his music with a large live band and that they would "now make this dream come true". Fans should "have the opportunity to experience his music in this unique way". Ticket sales were dated September 5, 2019. More than 55,000 pieces were offered, which, according to reports in " Billboard " magazine, were sold out within 30 minutes. Bergling described this fact as “overwhelming and hard to imagine.” He would be “incredibly grateful to every single person for sharing this evening with him and his family.” The visitors also included Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip of Sweden .

At the same time as the ticket sales, a website went online that provided further information about the concert as well as the final line-up. You could also donate on this.

The concert was broadcast live on Avicii social media channels as well as on Swedish television and radio. The entire recording as well as the individual appearances were made available afterwards on Avicii's Youtube channel.

program

Vincent Pontare - Tough Love
Aloe Blacc - SOS

Preliminary program

Between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Laidback Luke , Nicky Romero , Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Kygo performed with a 30-minute DJ set each . This was followed by a 30-minute set by David Guetta . In this he played a song based on a common idea with Avicii and finished with Afrojack in the week after his death . The name of the song was titled "Say Goodbye" by David Guetta. He said that it was the first and probably the last time that he would play the song. In addition, he performed specially created mash-ups by Aviciis and his own songs. Kygo also played an unreleased collaboration with Avicii with the song "Forever Yours", whose vocals were contributed by Sandro Cavazza.

Main program

At 9:00 p.m. Klas Bergling went to the microphone and gave a speech in Swedish in which he thanked the production team, artists and visitors. Then the actual concert began. It was introduced by Carl Falk , one of Avicii's closest friends and studio partners, on an electric guitar . The concert includes a total of 28 songs, the vocals of which are mostly performed live by the original singers. Both an orchestra and a choir accompany each individual song. Aloe Blacc, Carl Falk and Vargas & Lagola each devoted a few words to the musician before the songs SOS , Fades Away and Friend of Mine . Falk particularly emphasized the song Fades Away , as this was one of the last tracks that they produced together and Avicii designed the lyrics and the structure of the song. The song Levels , which served as the finale, was accompanied by various scenes from Avicii's life that were shown on the screen. In addition, fireworks were held during levels . Before that, all participants came on stage one last time and bowed hand in hand to the audience.

effect

Avicii's father, Klas Bergling, explained in an interview that the concert was intended as a sign that “the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide is put on the political agenda” and that more attention is paid to it. In addition, "police and other tools are needed to eliminate suicide risks, especially among younger people, and to take preventive measures."

A recipient of the ticket proceeds is the Swedish Mental Health Association Mind . Their Självmordslinje department , which provides a contact person for those affected, is to be supported with ten million SEK (approx. € 960,000) per year for three years . The aim is to be able to help people around the clock. Klas Bergling said that "this is the best" thing they could do to "reduce the number of suicides."
