The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas .

history

The Black Angels were founded in May 2004. The name comes from the Velvet Underground song The Black Angel's Death Song .

In 2005, The Black Angels were on the double album Psychedelica Vol.1 of Northern Star Records represented. Together with the growing popularity of their MySpace page , this enabled a huge leap in their popularity in the underground scene.

On Friday, August 5th, 2007, they performed at the Lollapalooza in Chicago. Among other things, appearances at SXSW 2006 & 2008 and All Tomorrow's Parties 2008 followed. Tour partners were the Blues Rock Band, The Black Keys , Black Rebel Motorcycle Club , The Warlocks , Roky Erickson , The Brian Jonestown Massacre , Queens of the Stone Age , The Raveonettes and Wolfmother .

The debut album Passover was generally well received within the independent rock community and recognized for its dark mood and lyrical content.

The band's songs were featured on the Death Sentence soundtrack , as well as in the second episode of the FOX series Fringe and the ninth episode of Californication and the first episode of True Detective .

Between October 28th and November 2nd, 2008, The Black Angels performed as a band with Roky Erickson ; a future publication of the joint appearances is in progress. The song Natural Selection was created with the band UNKLE on the album Where Did the Night Fall .

From April 23-25, 2010, The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels hosted their third annual music and arts festival, Austin Psych Fest 3. Among the 43 participating bands are The Raveonettes , Pink Mountaintops , The Warlocks , The Gaslamp Killer , Warpaint , Night Beats and psychedelic rock legend Silver Apples .

The third band album, Phosphene Dream , was released on September 14, 2010.

The Black Angels were represented again at the 4th Austin Psych Fest from April 29th to May 1st 2011.

Besides the band name, The Velvet Underground is also recognized in the band logo. This represents a high-contrast negative image of the singer Nico , who was a singer for The Velvet Underground at times.
