The Silver Apples were a New York space rock duo founded in 1967 , which became known mainly for electronic light music and to this day enjoys cult status in some music scenes. Founding members were Dan Taylor (drums) and Simeon Coxe, who operated a self-made synthesizer . The band probably named themselves after Morton Subotnick's synthesizer composition Silver Apples of the Moon (1967). Silver Apples has been Simeon Oliver Coxe's (* 1938) solo project since 2006.

Band history

Simeon 2008

The first album (s / t) was released in 1968 on KAPP Records and was in the Top 100 list of Billboard Magazine for ten weeks . The second album, Contact, was released in 1969. After the record label left the market, a third album, recorded in 1970, was not released. Then the band split up until 1994 a German label (TRC) re-released a CD bootleg of the first two LPs with a poster. Since then, numerous musicians around the world have played cover versions of the band or sampled the Silver Apples , and tribute albums have also been released . In 1996 the Silver Apples met again to record and play new pieces with friends and fans. Some of the subsequent releases included the first Silver Apple song in 26 years, Fractal Flow . In 1997, the Silver Apples appeared again under their name for the first time, but still without Dan Taylor. Numerous celebrities are said to have been present at the concert in the Knitting Factory . The press did not lack clear criticism:

  • "The Gods of Space Rock re-emerge!" Now Magazine
  • "A timely return by the late 60's technorock genius Simeon" The Village Voice
  • "Silver Apples ... a beautiful and mysterious artifact." The New York Times
  • "Simple weird magic. It's pop from outer space. " New York Post
  • "Wielding the handle of a homemade oscillator like a whammy bar, Simeon, the King of Plug, drove his ensemble of brushcut technoids like Mad Max conducting Kraftwerk." Rolling Stone Magazine

In 1997 the band played an extensive tour of the United States in the spring, a European tour in the summer and a Japan tour in the fall. Also in 1997 was the new CD, Beacon, which was recorded with Steve Albini on the band's label Whirlybird Records. Decatur appeared in 1998 . Also in 1998 Dan Taylor came back to the band. The Garden was released, it was rediscovered recordings for the lost third album (1970). Also in 1998 was Beacon remixed , remixes of the recordings with Steve Albini.

Simeon was seriously injured after a car accident and was out for almost two years. Despite partial paralysis, a CD was released in 1999 under the name Simeon & The Alchemysts together with the British band Alchemysts (Woronzow Records, Rubric Records). Further solo performances followed. In 2005 Dan Taylor died in Kingston, New York, at the age of 56. According to his own statements, Simeon Cox electronically reproduced Dan Taylor's drum sound as a solo musician.
