Since his father was unable to finance his studies, he initially trained privately, so that he could initially become a teacher at the city orphanage, while at the same time continuing his education by attending lectures at the Johanneum , a theologically oriented grammar school. In 1815 he was finally able to take up the desired study of theology and philosophy in Heidelberg , his studies were largely shaped by Carl Daub , whose influence also on Kröger's 1834 publication “Des Herr Wissense Kirchenraths und Professors, Dr. C. From 1820 Kröger worked as a preacher at the orphanage in Hamburg, in the following years he developed some effectiveness as a reform pedagogue, writer and teacher, so he successfully endeavored to introduce waiting schools for poor children under 2 years of age. The fact that his efforts were also recognized nationwide is shown by the fact that he received the Dr. phil from Heidelberg University. On his numerous travels he also made many acquaintances with teachers such as Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and Johann Peter Hebel , but also with the French philosopher Victor Cousin , some of whose works he translated into German in the following years.

The great catastrophic fire in 1842 changed the social and political circumstances in Hamburg, so that Kröger left his office and took over the management of a secondary school for girls whose head was his second wife for two decades.
