action

On Christmas Eve , the housewife Della has an argument with her husband Kenneth. After putting her two children - twins Terri and Tammi - to bed, she goes back to the mall to buy wrapping paper. Annoyed that a car that is practically ready for scrap is blocking two parking spaces in the totally overcrowded parking lot, she jams a corresponding notice under its wiper. After she finished shopping, she saw in passing that the note had disappeared. When she gets into her car to drive home in the empty void of shop closing time, the car on which she left the message is blocked. She gets out and is harassed by the four teenagers Huey, Vingh, Tomàs and Chuckie. When the security guard at the mall interferes, he is shot by Chuckie. While the gang is only slowly realizing that she has committed murder, Della can get into her car and drive away. Because she is the only witness to the murder, the gang follows her to kill her too.

Della has a car accident in a new development and has to flee on foot. Because her pursuers have already arrived there, she takes a flare and the toolbox from her car and hides behind an excavator . Della continues to flee through construction sites, but after a short time she is overtaken by her pursuers, who have also stolen her wallet along with her driver's license, etc. These force them to open the toolbox, as they suspect something valuable in it. Della, however, reacts quickly and can throw a wrench at Chuckie, which makes it possible for her to flee further. During the chase, Tomàs accidentally jumps on Huey, who breaks his neck and dies. In the further course of the chase, which is now taking place in the nearby forest, Della is caught by Tomàs. However, this is killed by her with a cross key. She escapes through a stream, but is still pursued by Chuckie and Vingh, who at best still feels safe in his company. A little later she seeks a fight with Vingh and kills the waycutter with a screwdriver . Then she hides behind a fallen tree trunk, where she is tracked down by Chuckie. He tells her he thinks her life is boring and that her husband treats her wrongly. Chuckie approaches the man he now knows by name, strokes her face and allegedly wants to run away with her while he is still holding his pistol in his hand. When the two lie on top of each other and kiss, Della manages to blind Chuckie with the flare and take his gun away from him. Then she shoots Chuckie and escapes from the forest.

Della is able to get her car running again and drives - parallel to the recovery of the guard's body - home, where her husband Kenneth complains that she had been gone so long. She ignores him and looks after her children, who have since fallen asleep. The drunk Kenneth then asks her in a rude tone what she brought him from the mall, whereupon she holds the gun in front of his face and replies: "Nothing at all!" It remains to be seen whether Della will shoot her husband.

criticism

“The fatalistic-feminist version of 'Rotkäppchen' - 'While She Was Out' is a dirty woman revenge movie in the exploitation style of the 70s: straightforward, humorless and tough. Friends of the genre should take a look because of the fairy tale parallels and the girl power subtext. "
