A cross wrench , also called a wheel cross or turnstile , is a hand tool that is used to loosen or tighten screws and nuts . It is a special type of socket wrench in which four different sizes are arranged crosswise. Cross keys are often used for changing wheels . They are also often used when installing sanitary facilities.

Size, shape and characteristics

The size of the cross wrench varies depending on the type of preferred use. As a rule, these are between 35 cm × 35 cm up to 70 cm × 70 cm in size. The shape resembles two sockets placed crosswise on top of each other that are welded together.

Most cross keys are either powder coated or chrome plated .

Key-width

For cars, the widths across flats 17, 19, 22 (rarely 21) mm are common, for trucks the widths 24, 27 and 32 mm. Some manufacturers occupy the fourth position with a square for driving nut tools. 1/2 ″ for cars and 3/4 ″ for trucks are then common.
