GoPro Hero 4 Silver Edition

GoPro is an American manufacturer of action camcorders based in San Mateo, California . The devices are small, waterproof and more robust than conventional video cameras and are mainly used in sports.

history

In 2002 Nick Woodman attempted to take spectacular surfing footage , but found the amateur technique of the time to be inadequate. He saw a gap in the market for cameras that were reasonably priced and which also enable amateurs to take high-quality recordings during sporting activities, and based on this idea he founded the GoPro company. The name GoPro is a combination of go and professional (English for "become professional").

Woodman started with self-sewn wristbands, into which he integrated various cameras, which initially lacked the necessary quality. For the next two years, he was looking for good cameras that could withstand high enough loads. In order to be able to produce these, Woodman borrowed start-up capital from his parents.

In 2004, the first Hero 35mm model , a 35mm film camera , hit the market.

In 2006 the company launched the first devices with digital recording , but in very poor quality and without audio recording.

In 2007, the Digital Hero 3, the first GoPro device with sound, was introduced.

In 2009, the Digital Hero 5 appeared, which could take panoramic shots.

In 2010, the company launched its first camera, the HD Hero, that was able to take 1080p recordings.

In March 2011, the company CineForm was acquired. The acquisition included the rights to the CineForm 444 video codec , which GoPro has been using in the 3DHero system since 2011.

In 2012 the HD Hero 3 was released, which can record videos in 4K resolution . In addition, Foxconn acquired an eight percent stake in GoPro for $ 200 million.

GoPro Karma drone

In June 2014, the company went public and sold 17.8 million shares to investors at a share value of $ 24 ($ 427.3 million total).

In April 2014, GoPro was named one of the ten best brand channels on YouTube by Adweek , based on views, shares and comments.

In February 2016, GoPro announced that it would reduce the model range in April 2016. In the future, only the models of the Hero 4 series are to be sold ( Black Edition , Silver Edition and Session ); the other (entry-level) models will be discontinued. The reason for this was recently disappointing sales and turnover figures for the company. On the other hand, GoPro will bring the first own drone onto the market with the Karma . With this, GoPro takes the step from a complementary provider to a manufacturer of its own quadrocopter. Its market launch was postponed to the end of 2016 at the earliest due to the halving of sales over the course of a year and the sharp drop in the share price.

The Karma drone was launched on the German market in April 2017 ; sales in the US began in early February. The price, range and flight time are comparable to DJI's drones. The Karma has fewer sensors (e.g. there is no ultrasound for indoor flight) and has no follow-me function, but the set includes a Hero 5 Black and the Karma Grip gimbal , both of which can be used without a drone . The first 2,500 drones sold were recalled because the power supply could loosen during the flight, causing a crash.

In January 2018, GoPro announced that it was getting out of the drone business. On January 8, 2018, the stock crashed to about $ 5. In the fall of 2014, it was traded at just under $ 100.

Properties of the cameras

The GoPro cameras (with the exception of the Hero 35 mm ) can record photos and videos. They are characterized by a very wide recording angle (170 °), which gives the recordings a certain recognition effect. Until 2008 there was an optical viewfinder . From the 2015 models some of them have a digital viewfinder (monitor) and from 2017 all models (except Fusion). All devices from Hero5 (2016) have video stabilization and voice control.

By connecting two cameras, recording in 3D is possible. Additional cameras can be connected so that recordings in the bullet-time style of the Matrix films are possible.

risk

The Advice Center for Accident Prevention (BfU) advised against the use of GoPro cameras when skiing in November 2014 , as the structure of the helmet can create a lever arm that increases the forces acting on the head in the event of an accident. In addition, knowledge of the camera could tempt skiers to take unnecessary risks in order to make recordings more spectacular. GoPro shares had already given way when a journalist reported that Michael Schumacher's GoPro camera was to blame for the severity of his injuries in his skiing accident .

For helmet cameras, Stiftung Warentest recommends the use of adhesive mounts with a predetermined breaking point in order to reduce the consequences of accidents, so that the camera detaches in the event of an impact.

According to the news portal Südtirol Online , Uli Emanuele wanted to shoot a video on behalf of GoPro in Switzerland. He died during a base jump from the rock on August 17, 2016 in Lauterbrunnen .
