Polaris Industries Inc. is a vehicle manufacturer based in Medina , Minnesota . The company was founded in 1954 and is best known for the production of snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles . In addition, Polaris initially manufactures motorcycles under the Victory brand (until 2017) and since 2011 under the revived Indian brand .

history

Polaris was founded by Edgar and Allan Hetteen and David Johnson and began designing and manufacturing snowmobiles in 1954. In 1985 ATV ( All Terrain Vehicles ) were added to the product range. One of the most famous vehicles in this class is the Polaris Sportsman . The first Polaris watercraft was manufactured in 1992 and marketed in the 1990s. In 1997, the first model of the Polaris Ranger , which belongs to the category of "side by side" vehicles, was presented. A year later, the motorcycle brand Victory was launched in the United States, which is produced by a subsidiary based in Spirit Lake (Iowa) . In 2005 Polaris took a stake in the Austrian motor vehicle manufacturer KTM Power Sports .

In 2010, Polaris Industries had annual sales of $ 1.99 billion. Measured in full-time equivalents , it employs around 3,000 people.

The motorcycle brand Victory was founded by Polaris in 1998 and discontinued in January 2017. Polaris had a temporary stake in the Austrian motor vehicle manufacturer KTM. In 2011 Polaris confirmed the purchase of motorcycle manufacturer Indian . The Indian motorcycle brand is to be retained. Also in 2010, Polaris bought the racing engine department of the Burgdorf-based company Swissauto Wenko AG in order to strengthen its engine know-how.

Electric vehicles

In 2011, Polaris bought into several electric vehicle manufacturers. A stake was acquired in Brammo Inc. in Ashland (Oregon) , which has specialized in electric vehicles since 2008 . This company launched the Brammo Enertia electric motorcycle in 2009 . In January 2015, Polaris took over Brammo's entire motorcycle division.

In June 2011, Chrysler took over the manufacturer Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) based in Fargo (North Dakota) . In 2015, GEM was one of the leading manufacturers of light electric vehicles ( Neighborhood Electric Vehicles ) with 50,000 vehicles produced to date .

The French manufacturer of small electric commercial vehicles Goupil Industrie has also been part of Polaris since 2011 . Goupil Industrie developed its vehicles on the basis of forklifts . The fully electrically powered model "Goupil G3" is only 110 cm wide, reaches a top speed of 40 km / h and, depending on the weight of the battery, can carry a load of 500 to 700 kg; the range is given as 80 to 100 km. The “Goupil G5” ( EG L7e ) model is equipped with a hybrid-electric drive and has a range of 60 km, fully electrically operated. Goupil has placed around 6,000 electrically powered vehicles (as of 2015) on the market.
