The Polaris Slingshot is a roadster or motorcycle with two front wheels and only one rear wheel from the American vehicle manufacturer Polaris Industries . The two-seater was introduced in 2014 and received a facelift in 2020 .
Legal classification
Depending on the registration area, the vehicle is classified as a motorcycle or a car .
EU
Under EU law, the vehicle is designated as a three-wheeled motor vehicle and can therefore be driven in Germany without an additional test by people who obtained a class 3 or B driving license before January 19, 2013. Since this day, a motorcycle test (class A) or a test for three-wheeled vehicles (class A restricted by the code number 79.03) is required. The vehicle meets the European safety standards for motorcycles, but not those of a passenger car.
United States
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration classifies the vehicle at the federal level as a three-wheeled motorcycle, which is why it does not have to meet the same crash test standards as a normal passenger car and does not have to have airbags . In 47 states of the USA there is also the legal term “autocycle”. Vehicles of this class can be driven there without a motorcycle license. However, the slingshot is not considered an autocycle in all of these states, as airbags are required for this class in Colorado or New Mexico , for example . Depending on the state, helmets may also be required for autocycles. For example, in states where it is certified as a motorcycle, the vehicle may drive on high-occupancy vehicle lanes .
Furnishing
The Slingshot has two 18-inch front wheels and a 20-inch rear wheel as standard. The vehicle also has ABS , a reversing camera, luggage compartments, a lockable glove compartment, two waterproof seats, a 4.3-inch LCD display and a Bluetooth audio system with six speakers.
Technical specifications
The 129 kW (175 PS) 2.4-liter gasoline engine comes from General Motors , has already been used in the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky and accelerates the Slingshot to 220 km / h.
