The Album Leaf is a music project by former Tristeza guitarist Jimmy LaValle, who was also a member of The Black Heart Procession . Various styles of music such as jazz and post-rock have been mixed with electronic sounds on the five studio albums recorded so far .
Band history
Named after a composition by Chopin named project The Album Leaf (dt. " Album Leaf ") was founded in 1998 by Jimmy LaValle, who in addition to his then main band Tristeza even at The Locust , GoGoGo Airheart and Black Heart Procession was. In 1999 his debut album An Orchestrated Rise to Fall was released . Several works from his experimental project were published. From 2004 The Album Leaf was signed to Sub Pop . After a tour with Sigur Rós he later took part as a musician in their live shows and was invited to Mosfellsbær in Iceland . There the album In a Safe Place was created , which contained considerably more electronic elements. Jon Thor Birgisson from Sigur Rós and Pal Jenkins (Black Heart Procession) were involved in the album. The following album, Into the Blue Again , was also recorded in Iceland. On the following album, A Chorus of Storytellers , LaValle used a live band for the first time, which helped him to record the album, instead of changing guests who supported him on individual tracks. The two guitarists Matthew Resovich and Drew Andrews, drummer Timothy Reece and bassist Luis Hermosillo took part in the album. With The Album Leaf LaValle performed at the Japanese Metamorphosis Festival , in the Hollywood Bowl together with The Incredible String Band . He also had an appearance at the Seattle International Film Festival , where The Album Leaf contributed to the background music for the silent film Sunrise - Song of Two People (1927) by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau .
Music genre
The Album Leaf mainly plays slow, experimental post-rock and ambient , which is influenced by a number of different styles. The first albums are reminiscent of Brian Eno and his carpets of sound and dream landscapes. Musically, the first albums contain subtle drum & bass elements and are purely instrumental. The collaboration between LaValle and Sigur Rós brought new elements to the music, including changing vocals, minimalist electronic music and instrumental neo-rock. The later albums are reminiscent of Sigur Rós as well as Portishead and The Notwist with their poppy sound . Elements of classical music can also be found on later albums. Parts of a symphony orchestra and a wind orchestra can be heard on A Chorus of Storytellers .
