Tristeza ( Spanish for sadness) is an American post-rock band from San Diego , California .

Band history

The band was founded in San Diego in spring 1997 and initially consisted of Christopher Sprague, Jimmy LaValle, Luis Hermosillo and James Lehner. Soon after, Stephen Swesey completed the lineup. In December 1997 the band recorded their first single Foreshadow in a garage and released it in the spring of 1998 on the unknown label Caffeine vs. Nicotine . The five musicians toured the USA over the summer and were already practicing for their first long player, which they recorded in the Louder Studios in San Francisco in autumn 1998. Makoto Recordings released their debut album Spine And Sensory in April 1999 while the band was back on tour promoting their album. In 1999 the single Macrame was released, which also sold well. In April 2000 the band recorded their second long player Dream Signals in Full Circles at the King Size Sound Labs in Chicago. Tiger Style Records released the album in September 2000 and the group then went on a promotional tour again. The album was also released in Europe and Japan, where it also received good reviews, so that Tristeza could go on tour there for the first time as a headliner in 2001. The band then recorded numerous experimental pieces that were produced by Gravity Records and released as Mania Phase and Mixed Signals in 2002. Before the upcoming tour through Europe, Japan and the USA Stephen Swesey left the group and was replaced by Eric Hinojosa.

In early 2003 Jimmy LaValle left the band to concentrate fully on his solo project The Album Leaf . Thereupon James Lehner also withdrew into private life for a short time. During this phase the album Espuma was released, which contained previously unreleased material, live pieces and with This Trap only one new song. The last two months of 2003 were spent rehearsing with Mitch Wilson on guitar. In 2004 the band prepared a new album after Sean Ogilvie came to the band for Eric Hinojosa. Finally, Mitch Wilson recommended the guitarist Alison Ables as a replacement for himself, so that the current formation was found. The new album A Colores was recorded at Key Club Recording in Benton Harbor, Michigan and mixed at Stratre Sound in San Diego. The new album was released in November 2005 on Better Looking Records . The maxi CD Bromas had already been successfully distributed by this label before. In August 2006, the new line-up, En Nuestro Desafio , was followed by another long player, which again received good reviews. It wasn't until three years later that the band's tenth studio album, Fate Unfolds, was released.
