action
Stella posts a new picture of her sister Abby on her wall and then talks to her friends who are on their way to a trip. Babs, her nurse, comes into the room and brings her the medication cart, which she will manage herself from then on, and informs her that a new baby has been born. On the way to the neonatal unit, she sees the newcomer Will.
Like Stella, Will suffers from cystic fibrosis and is scheduled to take part in a study for a drug . However, he does not stick to his therapy plan. Stella has an obsession with control and wants to help Will with his therapy plan. Will agrees, but only if he is allowed to portray her. Will also meets Stella's best friend Poe and learns that Abby has been killed in an accident. From now on, Stella and Will do all points of the therapy plan together. Over time, Stella and Will fall in love. The problem is that cystic fibrosis patients can't get more than four steps closer because each other's bacteria can kill them. Since Will has a special form of cystic fibrosis, which spreads his bacteria through saliva, Will is not allowed to kiss anyone in his entire life.
Stella decides to shorten the distance to three paces and uses a cue , which is about 3 paces long, which Will and Stella grasp at the ends.
On a date in the swimming pool, Stella runs the cue over her upper body while Will holds it. Then they undress and jump into the pool.
Will is turning 18, so Stella wants to throw him a surprise party. When Babs hears about the party, she interrupts it. The next day, Poe dies of a collapsed lung .
When Stella goes to her head, she and Will flee the clinic. Babs learns that the donor lung for Stella is ready to be transplanted. Babs tries to call Stella and write to her, but to no avail. Stella knows about the lungs , but stays with Will to hang out with him. When Will finds out about this, he urges Stella to go to the clinic immediately. Stella doesn't want this and falls from the bridge on which they were sitting. At first Stella makes fun of it, but the ice breaks and she falls into the water. Now Will has to help her and also touch her. When Will pulls her out of the water, he tries to regain consciousness with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation . He uses up too much air and collapses, but he kisses her before falling. Stella wakes up a few seconds later. You will be driven back to the clinic by ambulance. Stella is taken straight to the operating room and Will is stabilized. He survived but probably doesn't have much longer to live. Stella was not infected by his bacteria . With Will, however, the therapy didn't work.
The operation went well. Stella is now resting from it. Meanwhile, Will plans a surprise for Stella as she has always wanted to see the lights of the buildings at night. Abby and Stella always called them stars or lights.
Stella is lying in the recovery room and her relatives are standing around the bed. From the window you can see Will lighting up the lights. He confesses his love for her to Stella, but ends the relationship because he can't stand Stella seeing him die sick. She gets a present from him, a book of comics by Stella, Will and Poe. Stella's portraits are also in this book. At the end of the book it says that he will love her forever.
At the end of the film, Stella explains how important human touch is and that you shouldn't waste your time as a healthy person, because not everyone can live like healthy people.

production
In January 2017, Tobias Iaconis and Mikki Daughtry sold their untitled script to CBS Films for Justin Baldoni to produce and direct.
Baldoni first began dealing with cystic fibrosis when he was making the documentary My Last Days . He met the Youtuber Claire Wineland and then hired her as a consultant for the film before she died of complications from cystic fibrosis.
In January 2018, Cole Sprouse was cast with the lead role in the film. In April 2018, Haley Lu Richardson was hired to play, and Moises Arias joined in a supporting role. Main production began in New Orleans , Louisiana on May 25, 2018 and ended a month later on June 26, 2018.
The title of the film refers to the “Six Feet Rule,” a guideline from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that says that cystic fibrosis patients should be at least two meters apart to reduce the risk of cross-infection .
A novella of the same name by Rachael Lippincott was published in November 2018.
Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian composed the score . The soundtrack was released on Lakeshore Records.
backgrounds
The film is based on the experiences of the real married couple Katie and Dalton Prager. Both had cystic fibrosis. Katie, like Stella in the film, also had a YouTube channel. Katie and Dalton died in 2016.
criticism
“The tartly sweet romance lives for a long time from the realistic depiction of everyday life and the believable description of the protagonists' feelings. In the last third, however, the film changes its key and changes staging and narrative to a sentimental, tearful melodrama. "
