Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is the sixth studio album by the French electro band M83 , released on October 18, 2011 by Naïve and Mute . It's the band's first double album and M83's final album with keyboardist Morgan Kibby.

The album received mostly positive reviews. It debuted on the first weekend with 21,000 album sales at number 15 on the US Billboard 200 , the M83's highest album placement to date. As of March 2016, 300,000 records had been sold in the United States .

At the 2013 Grammy Awards , the album was nominated in the Best Alternative Music Album category. In August 2014, was included in the 100 Best Albums of the Decade So Far from Pitchfork added.

Background and recording

Before recording Hurry Up, We're Dreaming , Anthony Gonzalez moved from Antibes, France, to Los Angeles in mid-2010 . In an interview, Gonzalez described the move as follows:

“Having spent 29 years of my life in France, I moved to California a year and a half before the making of this album and I was excited and inspired by so many different things: by the landscape, by the way of life, by live shows, by movies, by the road trips I took alone… I was feeling alive again and this is, I feel, something that you can hear on the album. "

Gonzalez's tour with The Killers , Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon as well as his road trips to Joshua Tree National Park had a lasting influence on the album. Gonzalez cited the ambition of albums like Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) by the Smashing Pumpkins as the reason why he designed Hurry Up, We're Dreaming as a double album. As a further source of inspiration he named the double albums Ummagumma (1969) by Pink Floyd and the White Album (1968) by the Beatles .

He also referred to the two albums as brother and sister, where each track on a disc has a sibling on the other. The double album was recorded at Sunset Studio and The Sound Factory in Los Angeles. Due to budget constraints and union problems, the strings and brass players involved in the album were not paid and were referred to by pseudonyms.

The album recordings were made in memory of Gonzalez 'childhood. Gonzalez told the music magazine Spin that the album was “ mainly about dreams, how every one is different, how you dream differently when you're a kid, a teenager, or an adult. I'm really proud of it. If you're doing a very long album, all the songs need to be different and I think I've done that with this one. In an interview with musicOMH he described the album as a “ reflection of my 30 years as a human being ” and something that he dedicated to himself.

The English-language album title Hurry Up, We're Dreaming means Hurry up, we're dreaming , on the record cover it is stylized as “ HurryUp, We'reDreaming.” The front imperative is in bold font . The cover shows two adolescent girls sitting next to each other in a darkened bedroom in front of a shelf on a bed and looking at the viewer. The child on the left is wearing a fursuit .

Gonzalez describes the sound of the album as a mix between the synth-pop of the previous album Saturdays = Youth and the more ambitious pieces from Before the Dawn Heals Us . Furthermore, instruments such as acoustic guitars , flute and saxophone were used on the album , which could not be found on the previous albums of M83. The album also features contributions from Brad Laner (from the band Medicine ) and the American singer-songwriter Zola Jesus . Critics have noted musical influences from artists from the 1980s like Kraftwerk , Simple Minds , Peter Gabriel and Harold Faltermeyer , as well as from contemporary electro pop artists like Cut Copy .

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming was first announced on June 23, 2011 in a YouTube video entitled Echoes… which also included tour dates for North America. The lead single Midnight City won an award online on July 19, 2011 and was officially released on August 16, 2011.

On October 10, 2011, the full album was offered on the website of the American clothing company Urban Outfitters as a music stream. Urban Outfitters held simultaneous listening parties in all of its clothing stores on the Saturday before Hurry Up, We're Dreaming ' s was released.

On October 17, 2011, the music video for Midnight City and on May 30, 2012 for the second single Reunion was released. The Reunion music video is thematically a continuation of Midnight City , which is about a group of escaped children with telekinetic skills. On October 25, 2012, the music video for the song Steve McQueen was published. The last piece on the album Outro was used as background music for the trailer for the movie Cloud Atlas (2012) and in the snowboard documentary The Art of Flight (2011).

On November 5, 2012, a deluxe edition of three records with remixes by Midnight City , Reunion and Steve McQueen was announced, in which musicians Trentemøller and Mylo , among others , were involved. On December 5, 2012, the music video for Wait was released .

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming received mostly positive reviews. The album received an average rating (Metascore) of 76/100 from the rating website Metacritic based on 38 reviews.

Anna Nussbaum praised the German-language online magazine laut.de : “The common friend of catchy synth-pop-rock hymns has not heard anything better lately: a chirping synth, the shrill motif of a piece on the previous one Weeks hardly passed a path, forever inscribed in the sonic memory. M83 during the Hurry Up, We're Dreaming tour in November 2011 at the Music Box Theater.

Before the tour, Gonzalez started an open audition on the M83 website for a multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, bass and keyboard to accompany them on the tour. Jordan Lawloe ​​from Sparta Township, New Jersey won the audition.

The tour to Hurry Up, We're Dreaming began on 15 October 2011 in Mexico City and ended on 1 December 2011 in London . A follow-up tour started on January 12, 2012 in Los Angeles and was originally scheduled to end on August 8, 2012 in New York City .

During the follow-up tour, M83 played on April 13th and 20th at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , the St Jerome's Laneway Festival in Australia and New Zealand and the Lollapalooza in Chicago , Illinois. The tour was extended and only ended on November 8, 2012 in London.
