The Munich Rangers are an American football club from Munich . The club plays its home games in the Dante Stadium .

history

The Munich Rangers emerged from the youth of the Munich Cowboys and were founded in 1981. At that time, the club did not take part in the league. At first it was busy building a team capable of playing and a functioning club. The Rangers were a founding member of the Bavarian Football Association in 1982 and began a year later with a team capable of playing in the league operations of the 2nd Bundesliga South, where the club began to establish itself in the following years. In the 1986 season, the Rangers managed to take first place in the 2nd Bundesliga South with just one defeat, beat the champions in the 2nd Bundesliga North and thus win the Silver Bowl . Thus, the Rangers secured promotion to the 1st Bundesliga for the first time in 1986.

In 1987, the Rangers first met local rivals Munich Cowboys , whom they could only defeat in the second leg. In the following years, the Rangers were able to hold their own in the 1st Bundesliga and secure relegation until 1991. In 1990, the Rangers reached the playoffs, which were very important due to a redistribution of the league and only about relegation could be ensured. However, the Rangers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. 1991 also marked the downfall of the Rangers. First with the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga and in the following year the relegation to the Bayernliga followed. Even if a further relegation to the national league could be avoided, it was no longer promoted to a higher division. In 1997, the Rangers had to stop playing at the end of the season. This ended the chapter of one of the most traditional American football teams in southern Germany for the time being.

The reconstruction of the club and team took place in the years 1998 to 2000. On the 20th anniversary of the club in 2001, the Rangers made a comeback. The club began playing in the regional league, was promoted directly to the Bavarian League and was able to establish itself there alongside teams such as the Nürnberg Rams or the Erding Bulls . After two successful years in the regional league, the Munich Rangers were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga / GFL2 in 2014, which is home to both local rivals Ingolstadt and the Frankfurt Universe team .
