The Spandau Bulldogs (originally AFC Spandau Bulldogs ) are a traditional American football club from Berlin-Spandau .
history
The club was founded in 1988 and currently consists of seven teams of different age groups, including a women's team. The men's team played in the Regionalliga Ost in 2015 . The club regularly plays its home games in the Helmut Schleusener Stadium in front of more than 100 spectators. The attendance record was over 750 paying viewers in 2008.
Just three years after it was founded, the club rose to the regional league (3rd league) and was able to assert itself there between 1991 and 1997 and 2001 and 2002.
In 1994 they made the leap to the second Bundesliga ( GFL 2 ), but unfortunately the club was relegated again at the end of the season.
At the home games of the first team, a home game of the youth teams is usually organized, so that the travel costs for teams that come from Germany are kept as low as possible and the atmosphere is similar to the typical American flair of a football game.
Departments
In addition to the men's team, the Spandau Bulldogs have three youth teams (A, B, and C youth), two flag teams (Bambini and SeniorFlag) and, since 2009, a women's team, which after an (almost complete) dissolution in 2016, the league operation in the 2 . Women's Bundesliga resumed.
Cheerleading
There are currently two cheerleading teams.
For many years the cheerleading department has stood with its former teams, such as B. the Welps and the Poppies, for "Quality made in Spandau".
Previous successes
After the club was founded in 1988, after only six years they managed to move up from the fifth-class association league to the 2nd Bundesliga ( GFL 2 ), which is still the Bulldogs' greatest success today.
Overall, in the 27 years of the club's history, they played one year in the 2nd Bundesliga and six years in the Oberliga.
In 2014 the A youth team rose to the top division (GFLJ). This high sporting performance has been kept constant since then.
In 2008 the Bulldogs' A youth team won the undefeated East German championship, but renounced promotion to the youth Bundesliga (top division for juniors).
In 2009 Sam M. founded the ladies team together with some coaches and the support of the board, which already took part in the league in 2010. (2nd Bundesliga)
In 2014 the B youth team was runner-up in Berlin.
In 2014, the current C youth team was re-established and won the "Berlin Championship" of the 2015 season.
The women's team, founded in 2015, will start in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2016.
In 2016 the SeniorFlag-Team started in the DFFL (the German FlagFootball League). In 2016 the men's team managed to get promoted back to the regional league with just one defeat. The ladies of the Bulldogs finished their first season in the second Bundesliga in third place (with 5 to 5 wins). The A-Jugend will play in the Regionalliga in 2017 [obsolete] and temporarily leave the GFLJ. The B-youth lost the quarter-final game against the Berlin Rebels with 06:03. The C-youth could only play a few friendlies without an official league, but convinced there. The Bambini flags developed into a team in 2016 and were able to keep up with other teams.
