Hockey Pro League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hockey Pro League is an international competition for national teams organized by the World Hockey Federation (FIH) and will take place from 2019. The league also serves to qualify for the Olympic Games and the World Championships .

format

Each year nine teams for women and men play against each other in a double round from January to June. The nine teams in a league have their place for four years. A win in regular time is rated with three points. In the event of a tie, a shoot-out will take place. The winner of the shoot-out receives two points, the loser one. After completing the double round, the four best four teams play a final. These four teams are then also entitled to participate in the qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games.

Teams

India, which was initially approved for the Pro League with both teams, withdrew its teams in July 2017. They criticized the fact that the Pro League did not offer direct qualification for the Olympic Games and that their chances of participating in the World League rounds 1 and 2, which would still exist, would be greater. The FIH then named Belgium (women) and Spain (men) as participants.

Pakistan canceled its first three games against Australia, New Zealand and Argentina in January 2019 due to "unavoidable circumstances" and was then excluded from the current competition by the FIH, the games are canceled without replacement.
