Timo Wess (born July 2, 1982 in Moers ) is a former German hockey player and was the captain of the German national team . He is the older brother of Benjamin Wess .

Timo Wess, who had given up playing hockey in his youth in favor of football and finally decided to hockey at the age of 14, began his hockey career in the now disbanded hockey department of Moerser SC.

He played for the national team for the first time on February 26, 2001 in a friendly against India . A year later he became world champion with the German national team in Kuala Lumpur .

In 2006 he became world champion with the German national team in Mönchengladbach . He made a direct contribution to the German team's entry into the finals in this tournament by stopping an opponent's ball on the goal line three minutes before the end of regular time in the semifinals against Spain , thus keeping the way into extra time for Germany. He has been the team captain of the German national hockey team since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games . After the Olympic victory in 2008, he was no longer part of the squad at the major international championships. In 2012 he returned to the European Indoor Championships and helped win the title. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he won the gold medal with the German national hockey team for the second time in a row.

Wess had been a player in the hockey Bundesliga at Rot-Weiss Köln since the 2007/2008 season , previously he played for the Crefeld HTC . In Cologne he continued to play with his brother Benjamin . In September 2012, Wess announced his retirement from competitive sports. He played a total of 264 international matches, twelve of them indoors.

Timo Wess was considered one of the world's best defensive players and an excellent defensive strategist. A particular strength of "Wesa" (nickname) were his sharp penalty corners. Wess was one of the very few players in the world who could flick the hockey ball almost all over the hockey field.
